I got e-collar from vet. It's plastic with 3 holes for gauze (to tie around the kitten's neck). Vet's assistant gave me an idea to tie a breakaway collar through those holes around the kitten's neck (he could get out of the gauze very easily). but it turns out he breaks the collar with same ease.

I caught him licking his neutered area once. He doesn't have sutures though. should i still make him wear the buster-collar? i can't supervise him 24/7 and i was told by the vet to have the collar on whenever i am not able to supervise him (especially at night when he tends to get super-active). Even though he had the surgery just a couple hours back, he's still hyper-active and running and jumping around the room like normal (off of the furniture, curtains, etc.)

i don't know what to do and how to take care of him during this time. i have an exam coming up and i can barely supervise him this week.

i am paranoid he might get an infection if i don't put e-collar around him. :'(

Ugh I hate those cone things - they gave me one for my girl after she got spayed.  I went to a cheapo spay/neuter clinic, and they just gave me the cone collar after the surgery - didn't even put it on her for me!   Once we got home, I tried many times to put it on her and she and I were both getting really pissed off about it
So I said "forget this" and just let her roam freely.   She licked around the incision a little bit, but honestly, she was fine.  And the spay surgery is much harder on the cat and has a much larger incision than a neuter.   The boys really have it easy!   Now, I don't want to be responsible and feel bad if your cat is like the one-in-a-million boy cat who messes his incision up, but honestly - the neuter incision is soooo small that I really doubt he'll do any damage to himself, so I wouldn't worry about getting the cone collar on him.  99% chance he will be just fine (and 100% happier) without it, so I wouldn't stress yourself out about it.  I can say from firsthand experience when I got my boys neutered, they didn't even offer me a cone collar after their surgery and they were just fine, so I don't see why your boy wouldn't be fine without it either!

Haha When Vincent was neutered they didn't offer a cone they just gave me the pain killers, gave instructions on administering them and that was pretty much that lol

My kitty was a licker and gnawer after her spay. I tried the e-collar, but then, decided to put her in a homemade onesie. Just a piece of rectangular fabric with four leg holes cut out, tied or safety-pinned together in the back. I made sure to cut out the back leg holes closer to the edge so that she didn't get poop on herself. It kept her from directly licking the incision (she still licked the area, so she ended up licking the fabric). But it didn't stop her from gently gnawing at the incision site, since it was itchy from healing, but I think the fabric was able to get in the way of some of that gnawing, too.

I had tried a tube sock on her at first, but it just freaked her out and felt largely ineffective because only half her wound was covered and would make it awkward for her to walk. I'm not familiar with how neutering goes though, so it could be that it works for you.

Thank you for all the answers everybody. he calmed down with the attacks and running around at night but i still put him in a playpen (and i slept beside it)

He isn't licking it today, and he seems to be much calmer and kinda sleepy (probably the anti-biotics!)

Blue, did you get pain meds for your cat? I had to pay an extra $30 for pain meds for my bud, but that wasn't even a debate, i wanted him to be comfortable and not in pain. The vet gave me little "syringes" (not sharp, no needles) filled with a liquid painkiller i administered to my cat by mouth.

The reason i ask is that most kittens get zonked out by the pain meds, and that may help your situation. My Bud was very similar to the way you describe your kitten, hyperactive and seemingly not slowed down by the operation, but he chilled out and relaxed after i gave him his meds. Not nearly as chill as other people have described their cats on pain meds, but at least i wasn't worried about him hurting himseld by running around like a lunatic two hours after getting neutered.
