My husband grew up with cats, so when he was 21 and got his own apartment during college, taking in littermates Belle and Jasmine from his parents was a no brainer. We actually rescued them in high school... hard to believe these beautiful girls are eight now! Jasmine is the black cat, she was the runt of the litter and is about 8-9 pounds but healthy as can be. She's quiet and sweet and can be sitting on your lap for ten minutes without you noticing she's there! Her sister Belle is quite the opposite; she greets visitors at the door, is interested in "physics" (loves watching water as she pushes cups), is very vocal, and can be quite annoying at times. We joke about her but we wouldn't trade her for the world. These two are truly two of a kind: they will clean each other every day and it ALWAYS ends in a play fight. Jasmine and Belle made me a cat lover!
My husband and I were long distance when I was away at college and he went to a prestigious local university; the girls kept him company when he could no longer deal with messy male roommates! I thought our family was complete for some time, but I got quite the surprise via text when I was still in school: he had rescued a kitten from his parents' backyard and fell in love. I told him no, he told me I'd adore her, and now Nala is the little spinach-eating, tail-chasing, baby-meowing kitty love of my life. She's very shy but loves to be petted in the bed; she also likes to growl at the door when she hears noises outside, but she'd NEVER attack! Sometimes I think she thinks I'm her other half, like Jasmine is to Belle, because she plays with me like kittens play with their mama or siblings.
Those are the important little princesses, but I'll introduce the "Emperor" and "Empress" as well: my husband and I! We jokingly call ourselves that to our cats because they need to know we're more highly ranked than princesses. Of course they don't see us that way, but it's nice to pretend they don't rule the roost all the time
My husband (now 25, works investments) and I (now 24, trained in biochemistry but Dir. of PR at a nonprofit organization) married at 22 and 23 after I graduated college. We suffered a devastating end to an unexpected pregnancy and I have gone through some major trauma recently, but our fur-babies have helped keep us going. We bought a house for our loves to run around in, complete with cat doors and a screened in porch for them to play in when supervised. They keep my deep desire to have children at bay as I develop professionally and enjoy life with my amazing husband for the next few years
One of the greatest therapies of all has been volunteering at the shelter, and we are now thrilled to be fostering a mother cat and her five (!) kittens in our first go at fostering.
It's wonderful to be here and I hope to get to know many of you and your furbabies on this fantastic site!
