My 13 year old cat has a tumor in her ear canal that is growing into her throat and now it is hurts her to open her mouth to eat.  She acts like she wants to eat, but just backs away from her food.  She is now only 4.4 lbs, she is starving to death and I feel helpless.  Any suggestions on what I can feed her?  I see that some people suggested Ensure or baby food.  Any other suggestions?  Any help would be appreciated!!

Has your vet given you any advice on when it is time to let your kitty go?   I know it is a hard thing to think about.

I'm so sorry you're in this position. She sounds like she's in a pretty bad way. I think you're going to have to go back to your vet and discuss your options. With a tumour in her throat it may be impossible to get her eating again. I'm sorry I can't be more positive.

I'm very sorry for you and your cat, this is awful.  Based on what you describe, cat is in pain, unable to eat, starving, and unless your vet has suggested that there is a treatment available that can work, your cat sounds like he is ready to go and that euthanasia is the humane thing to do, the final gift you can give your friend.  Hard as it can be to do this, living with the memory of keeping her too long will be far worse.

The ASPCA's pet loss hotline has a very experienced and compassionate counselor who counsels many people who are trying to figure out if the time has come.  I have spoken with her on many occasions and she's great, and the service is free.

I urge you to either call her or talk to your vet.
