This is my first time to the forum. My cat's name is Teemu and he is about 10 or 11 years old. He has hyperthyroidism. He is on meds now after eating hills diet for the last 8 years. He was losing weight and started weighing only about 4 lbs. Now that he is on medication, he is eating better. He has also a sensitive stomach so every three four days he used to throw up after eating. I recently started him off on friskies canned food. He loves it. He is able to keep the food for longer time. But just like the user above, he keeps wanting food all the time. I split the 5.5oz can twice a day and feed him so he eats 5.5oz a day and still is hungry. What my problem is, I am looking for 3oz can from the same brand and I cant seem to find it anywhere. He likes only Pate. What a picky guy eh? If I switch to anything else, throwing up starts again. Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to TCS :wavey:

If he's still underweight he may genuinely need a little more food. Its also possible that his medication is affecting his appetite. I'm glad you've found food that Teemu both likes and can digest :)

Is that 4 lbs kilograms or USA lbs (not metric)? If it's American lbs, 4 seems underweight for a 10 year old male cat. Definitely talk to you vet if that's the case. But if it's kilos, that's about 10 lbs which is in the average weight range. How much did he weigh before you noticed the weight loss?

I have a male that was about 13.5 lbs (non-metric) and was down to 10.8 at his last vet check up in May. They asked me if that was intentional and I said no. They did a thyroid test and ruled out hyperthyroidism. Early in the year I switched all 3 cats to Science Diet for senior cats which I guess he didn't like. So I got him back on his old food, Natures Recipe for indoor cats. I think he's put a little weight back on. At least I can tell he's eating most of his food everyday, he wasn't with the senior food. I also give my cats Friskies wet food on the weekend or as treats. I don't think they do make a smaller can than the 5.5 oz.

Your little guy may be more hungry because of the medicine he's on. Or the wet food may not be that filling for him. Adding some dry food he can keep down, could help with the hunger. Or you could add a half of a second can. The remaining half can store in the fridge till the next day. You can pick up a can cover pretty cheap or a sandwich bag works fine too.

No, Friskies does NOT come in a 3 oz can.  Fancy Feast does, however, and their CLASSIC line (in the U.S.) is pate.  Have you tried that for him? Or SHEBA pates?

And I agree, if he still seems hungry, either he's not getting enough, or it may be his medication.  Hyperthyroidism greatly effects appetite, so it's possible his medication needs adjusting.  How often do you check his numbers (thyroid)?  I would check to make sure they're in the right place and his medication doesn't need adjusting.  If everything is as it should be, then I would feed him more.  If he doesn't like the Fancy Feast as additional food in 3 oz cans, then I would feed him a partial can of Friskies and put the leftovers in the fridge, as CatminionJess suggested.  Then pop the leftovers in the Microwave for just a few seconds on defrost, stir them up and serve them up
(taking them out of the can before microwaving, of course
)
