My cat Aaron loves being pet all over but when I go to pet him on his head and touch his ears he shakes his head like his ears itch then he will start scratching the inside.

If your cat is scratching at his ears consistently as well and you are seeing dirt in the ears, then it is possible! The only way to find out for sure is to have the vet look in your cat's ear with a scope. But usually the first telltale sign is the black gunk inside of the ear. Some cats will have a head tilt as well from the ear becoming infected and bothered. Ear mites are easily eradicated once diagnosed though.

I have never used the OTC feline ear mite treatments but would assume they could work. Some people use mineral oil drops in the ear as it drowns or suffocates the ear mites. Still - I would at the very least call the vet and ask. Surely they will be able to answer your question about what to use OTC or at home safely. OR they may even put up an ear mite med. for you if you have already brought your kitten in to see the vet. The ear meds from the vet are not that expensive and will work effectively! Good luck with Aaron and thanks for rescuing him. ( have been posting in your other thread too ;)). :hugs:

If he is scratching his ears, that can be a sign of earmites. Do his ears look dirty inside as well? If they're clean, maybe he just doesn't like his ears touched. One of mine doesn't. Your vet can swab his ears and test it to know for sure. But over the counter treatments can help too. My go to is Revolution. My vet recommends it over other options because it treats more than just earmites. It's pricey, but it does a lot. They also suggested an ear wash. I can't remember the exact name right now, but it's by Virbac. It smells like baby powder and my cats smell so fresh after I use it on them.

Revolution - Benefits:
Protects your pet from heartworms and fleas
Fights both internal and surface parasitic infections
Treats Sarcoptic mange in dogs
Treats and controls ear mites
Controls American Dog Tick infestation
Treats and controls roundworms and hookworms in cats
Only administered once a month
Safe and easy to use
