My kitten has two sets of canine teeth on both sides of his upper jaw. Is one of them the adult tooth and will it fall out on its own? Or is this something I should get checked out?

Did you just notice this today?   Is your kitten around 6 months old?

I have posted photographs of Mouse with two sets of lower canines - he had them for about 1 day and then the kitten milk teeth fell out.   Most likely you are seeing the same teething stage with your kitten.  If it goes on for long and seems to bother your kitten then give your vet a call, but I think what you are seeing is just part of their natural growing up - make the most of it as most people never get so see this.

Thanks! He's about 6 months old and I noticed the extra teeth almost a week ago. Reading about retained teeth online scared me into thinking there was a problem. I really hope they fall out soon.

If you noticed the two teeth there a week ago and they are both still there now it sounds like the kitten canines are not as loose as they usually are once the adult teeth are well through.    Most often the kitten teeth come off quite quickly which is why most people don't see the 2 sets together.

With this having gone on for a week, if all the teeth are still there it does sound better for your kitten to be seen by a vet - if the teeth are being 'retained' the longer they are there the greater the risk of them causing jaw alignment / bite problems and other health issues for your cat.  On that basis seeing a vet quickly could save you a lot of money and your cat a lot of long term pain.

A vet should be able to tell quickly if your kitten's teeth are loose and ready to come out or if they are being retained and surgery needed.   Hopefully they are ready to come out but best checking.

I tried wiggling the baby teeth to see if they were loose, but no luck. The earliest I can get to a vet will probably be next Sunday. Another week shouldn't hurt too much right? He's still eating and drinking water normally and doesn't seem to be in pain. Plus he still has enough energy to wrestle our other cat haha.

I don't have experience of a cat where the kitten teeth didn't come way, though Mouse certainly held on to his for as long as he could.  I think that as you have noticed what is happening and have the quickest appointment you can get this is a good thing.   One week in the scheme of things is not a long time, and if you have explained to the vet surgery what the appointment is for they will usually take in to account the level of risk when offering you an appointment.

From what I have read I think the main issue is where the kitten teeth are left in place long term and the adult teeth all form out of alignment so the bite is not as good as it should be.   If the kitten teeth are not left there long term, and esp if the adult teeth are just starting to come through then the risks of long term bite being affected will be much smaller.  The other problem seems to be if the gum line at the base of the two teeth is inflamed and not close fitting then bacteria and dental decay take hold.

Of course you can always hope that all this wrestling does the job before you get to the vet but best having the appointment made, esp as you have managed to see if they are loose and seems not (very brave of you, I hope your fingers didn't suffer).

Do keep us updated on how this goes.  I really hope your kitten is fine and does not need any treatment other than perhaps a little extra help and encouragement for the kitten teeth to be given up.

The same thing happened to my kitten too.  She's almost 5 months old and she's been teething like crazy. I checked her mouth the other day when I found one of her baby teeth on the floor, and she had two upper canines growing in the same place.  The adult tooth was already pretty large, so I think they had been growing in alongside the baby teeth for a little while.  However, her baby canine tooth fell out yesterday!

I wouldn't worry too much about your kitten, as it's possible that the teeth will fall out on their own. However, it's good that you have a vet appointment, just in case.  Hopefully it'll fall out really soon, though!  Keep us updated on how it goes!

Good news! One of the baby canines is loose and should be coming out soon! I'm not sure if this was the solution, but I gave him a piece of chicken bone to chew on (supervised of course) and an hour later the tooth is loose. He's usually pretty relaxed about me opening his mouth and wiggling his teeth around so no bites. :)

Bring on those chicken bones (raw of course!)!!!    Hold on to the vet appointment for now of course but this sounds great.

One of the baby teeth fell out sometime during the weekend and the other one is coming loose! It looks like no vet appointment is necessary this time.
