Hi to whoever reads this, I'm just abit concerned about my beloved childhood cat Fluffy I've had her since I was 2 and she was a kitten which makes he 20! So my cat has started acting very strange, she is getting on quite a bit with age but she looks in great shape. She struggles with jumping onto high things but still moves about quite a lot. So she has recently started pooping outside of her litter tray, but it's what she does after which is weird. When she does her business just outside of the tray she almost has this routine of running to the front door meowing and then scrapping her bum across the floor like a dog would? All very strange! Then she will go and hide in her basket for a while I've tried persuading her out with her favourite treats but she has none of it and stays there. I can't help feeling she's frustrated but I don't know what with.. Or is it just old age maybe ? Help!!

Is Fluffy's stool been hard?  Maybe it is hurting her when she is trying to go.  I would take a stool sample to the vet and maybe have her checked out just for your peace of mind.  I have had several kitties live to over 20 yrs and you really have to watch any strange behaviors that start, sometimes it can be nothing but better safe than sorry.  Good luck with Fluffy, please let us know.

I suspect Fluffy is constipated.  This is something that many elderly cats have to contend with, and the pooping outside the box is a classic symptom.   (My elderly cat does the same thing, only once she finally goes, then she vomits as well, from straining so hard
.)  Additionally, if  that's her "issue', once she manages to go, she may feel that there is still a little bit of stool left that she needs to "wipe off" by scooting on the floor .

It's also possible that she is having anal gland issues, which could be another reason for her "scooting".

If she appears to be constipated, which you can usually tell by her straining when she goes, and sometimes by her not producing anything, Miralax works pretty well to help with that.  I now give it to my old girl everyday, should probably do it twice a day now.  1/8 teaspoon mixed in a little water, then mixed into her food.  If you don't live in the United States, the product might be called PEG 3350, or look for something with polyethylene glycol 3350 as the active ingredient.
