Hey guys, I am here asking for advice on behalf of my friend today.
She has a 14 week old kitten (she is very underweight and is too underweight to be spayed yet) along with 2 other adult cats roaming the home. The kitten does use the litter box sometimes but other times the kitten will pee or poop in corners or attempt to hide it. She has litter boxes through out the home and the kitty litter is unscented. The kitten, Sadie eats regularly and consistently about every hour. She poops about 4-7 times a day. Any advice on getting the cat to only use the litter box?

Has your friend's cat been to the vet yet?

The fact the cat eats as much as you say, and poops that many times a day, and yet is still underweight, tells me that it may have worms or other parasites.

Although kittens grow fast and eat a lot, at 14 weeks the kitten should not be pooping that often. I suspect that once he is de-wormed (and the other cats should be too if they share litter boxes), he will gain weight, poop less, and use the litter box more often.

Your friend should clean all the other areas where this kitten poops with an enzyme cleaner to erase the smell. Once cats go they tend to continue using those places because they bear their scent.

But please tell your friend that her cat needs to be checked by a vet as soon as possible.

What is consistence of the poop?  sausages / pears  or rare?   Anyway, 4-7 times a day sounds quite a lot.

What is the food they use?   Dry food with much cereals fill up tend to cause much poo, as the cat must eat much to get enough nouishment, and there are much left overs because only a minor part is used up.   and this means, lotsa of poo.

Had she been properly dewormed?  At least twice?

Last.  Are the other residents letting her do her business in peace?  If the cats arent really friendly with each other, the litter may become a moment of stress as using is makes you vulnerable  literally "with the pants down and the bottom bare".    Its not unusual  a hostile resident assaults the mobbed cat in the litter...

She has had the kitten for about 2 or 3 weeks and so Im not sure how much weight she would have gained in this time period, but she is on deworming medication right now. she was dewormed at the shelter so this will be round 2. She is going to try the enzymes though. This she hasnt tried yet.The thing is all the cats get along devinely. Even one of the older cats kind of adopted her and he shows her around and Sadie starts to mimic his actions. Sarthur2 Sarthur2 StefanZ StefanZ

"And the poops vary, it's a healthy mix of all 3. She eats primarily dry food and eats some wet food but doesn't really like it. And she poops completely at peace the cats don't care if she poops." "Sometimes it's more liquidy and others it's solid." "She's gotten a little bigger don't get me wrong she was a lot tinier Like bones wise she's larger But only slightly" StefanZ StefanZ Sarthur2 Sarthur2

It may be the worming medicine itself that is causing the excessive pooping. It can cause tummy upset.

She may also be adjusting to her new diet since she arrived a couple of weeks ago. She also needs kitten chow, not adult dry food. Kitten chow has extra calories and vitamins and minerals that kittens need to grow on.

She would benefit from wet food, so your friend should try to find a flavor the kitten likes and feed her that twice a day in addition to the kitten chow.

The kitten should have no milk or cream as cats cannot digest lactose. If she wants to give the kitten milk she should buy powdered kitten formula (KMR), preferably by PetAg, and mix it and serve in a dish.

Hopefully, the kitten's system is adjusting and she will reach a point where she is only pooping once or twice a day soon.

Ok, so the cats being good friends is a blessing here as always, and thus, no problem by this.  Check.

The poo sometimes liquidy  hints something - rare thay may be as pancakes, but liquidy is not supposed to be.  Perhaps the deworming as stated.   If so, it hints perhaps there ARE some worms, as the diarrhea comes as reaction to worms and the medicine on them.

There is still the question on what dry food the kitten gets.   Dry food with lotsa of cereals and other carbo fillers - like is the common for almost all brands sold at the usual food stores, tends to give big amounts of poop.  Its a typical complain.    If so the solution is to give mainly wet food (almost no carbo) or more pricey dry food.  Or at least, choose brands where its less of the carbo fillers but more meat.  Its possible to find such, if you know what to look after, even among the shelves of the usual food store.

Sadie has been eating kitten chow and my friend has not fed her any milk products. Maybe it is the deworming medicine causing her the runs. I guess all she can do is use the enzyme cleaner as you mentioned earlier and just hope this ends when she finishes her medication. Thank you guys for the advice! StefanZ StefanZ Sarthur2 Sarthur2

You're very welcome! That's what we're here for :).

I think your friend does need to wait for the medicine to finish. Hopefully that will do it.

If not, feel free to come back with more questions or an update!
