I have recently (2 weeks) adopted a 3 year old long hair cat. My whole life I never had a cat, except in college my mom had a cat I would see occasionally and I did have a minor reaction to him. However, with my new baby, I feel sick all day I am with her. My lymph nodes in my neck are swollen and sore all day, I sometimes get rashes that itch on my arm, and when I wake up my eyes are crusted shut and post nasal drop kills me. I've purchased an air purifier to try and help but after three days of it running, nothing is better. When I leave the house, I tend to feel better but I've been home for 20 minutes and I already have a headache again. My friend suggested antihistamines but I don't want to live the next 10-15 years of my life on medication. She and I have not fully bonded and I'm wondering if my best bet is to rehome her. She is a healthy, beautiful "luxury" cat and I know she would be able to find a new home. I just don't want us both to be miserable or to have to get rid of her in 6 months when we are fully bonded. I want what is best for my health and my new cat.

Yes, if you can find her a good home, it is better to do it now than later. Being sick all the time is pretty awful. You might be able to get allergy shots that help if you decide you want to stick it out though.

If you do rehome her but still want a cat, there are some breeds that are considered to be hypoallergenic. Although the allergins are still present, they are so reduced that often people don't have a reaction. Siamese are the breed we hear about most often but there are others - just Google for more info.

I hope you come up with a good solution. Normally I would recommend rehoming only as a last resort but you really can't go through life being sick over this. How would you go about rehoming her? Do you have a no kill rescue that you can work with?

I was looking to get a Siamese cat and I was searching for a few months through Craigslist and Petfinder and even messaged the local Siamese rescues about a few adult cats- I didn't want a kitten, I was more interested in an adult. I found Lexie through an owner that didn't have time to give her and wanted her to be happy. She's a three year old Munchkin/Persian mix with Siamese markings. She is beautiful. I would most likely call the woman that I got her from and ask if she wanted to rehome her or if she would help me do so. I have no doubt I could find a great home for her easily.

Lexie does sound beautiful. You might be able to find her a new home through a Persian rescue. I would contact no-kill rescues as well. If you do rehome her privately, be sure to ask for an adoption fee to make sure potential adopters are really serious. There are horrible people out there who look for free cats to use for such things as bait for dog fights. It would be great if her former owner would take Lexie back or help you with the rehoming process. I'm sorry you are so allergic, this must be very hard for you.
