Tasty liquid topper?

Hi community!
Are there any tasty liquid toppers that I would be able to give to my kitties? Both my cats have a history of URIs, so I've been giving them l-lysine supplements for a while by mixing it into their wet food. I used the whole foods' brand, but more recently have begun changing to the NOW brand since it's pure l-lysine. I usually mix in 1000mg into a 6oz can of wet food, so each kitty gets around 600 - 1000mg a day. They don't mind the taste of the whole foods l-lysine at all, but don't like the taste of the NOW brand; I don't know if it's because it's a bit coarser or something. They'll tolerate it if I put around 500mg of the NOW l-lysine in the can, but won't eat their food if I put more in. I don't want them getting adversed to their food, so I'm thinking of feeding them the l-lysine separately and giving their wet food as-is (aside from adding a bit of water).

Today, I mixed up 1000mg of l-lysine with water, added a bit of plain unsweetened yogurt, some little freeze dried treats they like, and they hesitantly lapped up maybe half of the liquid concoction in total. I'm wondering if there was some irresistible liquid-something that cats tend to like that I could mix with their l-lysine instead.

I'm not sure about liquid toppers, however, I was just wondering about the amount of lysine you are giving. I also give lysine to my FHV cat but 600 - 1000 mg daily on a regular basis seems rather high from what I've read about lysine and cats.

Lysine can lower the amount of arginine (another essential amino acid) that cats need in their diet (which is why I give it to my FHV cat because arginine can also feed the herpes virus but too low a level of arginine can also cause ammonia toxicity). I have given up to 500 - 1000 mg *temporarily* when my cat has a flare-up but otherwise I keep it around 250 mg or less on a regular basis, per Mikey"s vet.

Did your vet suggest 600-1000 mgs daily?

Pure lysine tastes a bit salty, (I tasted the powder), I use Carlson's, which is also pure lysine and only costs about $9 from Vitamin Shoppe.

When I give Mikey higher amounts, I split the amount into several meals (although he eats raw now and raw has lysine so I'm giving him much less lysine).

Have you considered making some simple chicken broth? You could make a big batch of broth, portion it into daily servings, freeze and then thaw daily what you need. You could add some freeze dried treats after thawing.

Good luck. :)

Hiya, yes, That's the amount my vet recommended: 1000mg during flair ups, and at least 500mg as a daily supplement. I haven't been quite exact about it, since I just put 1000mg in a can (or sometimes, forget to), and so, they sometimes get a little less or more depending on how much food they choose to eat that day. I had actually been wondering if I should increase the dose because my little one has been sneezing a little lately, and my vet said lysine is nearly impossible to overdose. He hadn't mentioned anything about arginine when advising me about the lysine supplement, but I'll double-check with him on it..

Chicken broth! a great idea.

I was also thinking some Nutri-cal fish-flavored paste that I had, but.. I don't want pudgy kitties, haha. I was also wondering about fish oil, or any particular oils, but then I got confused about omega-3's and 6's.

Okay, I know that also in some cats too much lysine can cause loose stools, I noticed this with my little guy as well as some of foster kitties (a rescue group I'm in contact with via my job), that too much lysine can cause. But overall it really does do wonders.

Salmon oil or krill oil provides the Omega 3's, cats generally get more than enough Omega 6 in their diet.

I personally wouldn't give the cats Nutrical - the corn syrup and soybean oil especially the soybean oil, as soy has been linked to hyperthyroidism in cats. Cats also don't need sugar in their diets.
