Hello from Georgia (the country
)  I'm new to this board and as a new cat owner I seek help anywhere possible. My male Abyssinian is 6 months old(around 6lb) and he's already neutered. I know there are special diets for spayed and neutered pets, like food with less protein. My cat is not very keen on dry food, so mostly we are on wet food. I'm a bit confused about how much to feed him daily. He's looking for food all the time, although I give him 2 cans of wet food (3oz) and somewhere around 30-40 grams of dry food.(recommended by the vet)  I feed him wet food in the morning, then leave dry food while I'm at the office and again we have wet food for the evening meal. I just want to be  sure to not let him overfeed.

I'm also interested in what brand food, which type, you're giving to your spayed/neutered beloved ones, thanks in advance.

I have an Aby too
I didn't change my Aby's diet after he was neutered. I continued to feed the same raw food. I don't think you really need any special food for neutered and spayed cats.

Try giving more canned food daily. Are 5 oz cans available in Georgia the country? If not, try giving an additional 3 oz can daily. Maybe not the entire can all at once but maybe split it into two meals in addition to the other 2 cans you give. If he doesn't eat dry food, then you don't need to feed any even if the vet recommends it. Save some money in your wallet
Can you get freeze dried raw food in Georgia? You can leave some of that out for snacking on and many cats love freeze dried raw food over dry food.

You generally want to feed 20 to 25 calories per pound of ideal body weight. A 6 lb cat needs around 120 to 125 calories daily but since you have an Aby (and I assume an extremely hyperactive one), you should feed a little more, maybe around 150 to 175 calories daily. Abys tend to burn up a lot of calories with their hyper activeness. When my Aby was 6 months old he was eating close to 200 calories of raw food daily. My Aby is 5 now and 10 pounds and he eats a little less than 200 calories daily now.

Thank you for replying, your post is very helpful. There are both 5 and 3 oz cans available, it's just the choice is limited, no grain free or freeze dried food on the market. The best option is royal canin wet food. That's why I opted for the option to purchase good quality dry food from amazon. I bought little bags of Merrick, Welness and Solid Gold, the latter did the job. He's not super exited over it but does eat in small amounts.

He eats up to 200 calories daily, so I guess we're ok . I'll try splitting his meals and serving him food in small amounts throughout the day, as you recommended.

Btw, do you give your kitty any supplements?

No, I don't give either of my cats supplements.

Can you get programmable timed feeders through your Amazon web site or other online site? Something like this would work great to give your cat small meals throughout the day. That might keep his tummy happy. Since I feed raw food, I don't leave anything out for my cats to eat during the day but they're ok.

Aren't these feeders made only for dry food, can you fill it with wet food too?  I know it's not recommended to leave wet food out  for too long so I leave a cup of dry food during my working hours.  When I come home the cup is never empty. The feeder would be great if he ate more dry food.

He eats every brand of wet food, whichever taste you like but "no thank you" attitude  to dry food, he snacks on treats though, go figure. :)

Programmable timed feeders can be used with canned food. Canned food is ok if left out all day but you do want to throw any uneaten food away at the end of the day. You can freeze the canned food into serving sizes and place the frozen blocks into the feeder to slowly defrost. Some brands of feeders have an ice pack to keep canned food cool. I've used a programmable timed feeder for canned food before and never had an issue with it.

Ok, I think it'll be a good investment for the wellbeing of my little rascal, thank you. I'll look up for the feeder with an ice pack.
