Continuing on last week's school theme...

How did you get to school when you were a kid?

We moved around some so I've done it all.  I walked when I lived close enough in elementary school.  I rode a bus for a couple years when i didn't.  I walked in middle school and rode the bus in high school until I had a car of my own.  The car was definitely my favorite and the bus was my least favorite!

I walked in elementary school, then took a bus in middle and high school till I got my driver's license at 16.

Elementary school I took a school bus. The first school I went to wanted me to walk to school because technically I lived in the neighborhood But it would have taken at least 40 minutes to walk there. My parents and some of the other parents who lived near us complained to the school and school department and we got a school bus. But the bus stop that they gave us was too far away (another 40 minute walk) and not easy to walk to in the winter (down a long steep hill) So after more complaining, we got a bus stop right at the corner. The second school was definitely too far to walk to so I took a bus.

Middle school I walked since the school was right down the street, a mere 10 minutes away.

High school there were no school busses in the morning so everyone relied on public transportation. To get to school by 7am (hopefully) I had to leave the house at 5am and take 3 busses across the city
Afternoons there were school busses (not a yellow one, though. Just the regular public transportation busses assigned to the school) so getting home wasn't as much of a deal.

I walked to school for the first three years, then, when we moved, I had to ride the bus.

I rode a bus through seventh grade. Then I walked in eighth, ninth and half of tenth. Then I moved and rode the bus again until the end.

I went to elementary school in India and there was no bus until 6th grade. Before that my mother drove us.

I walked mainly but sometimes got rides from people until 9th grade, then I got an old car (given to me from my sister) and gave rides to everyone. I only had a permit and didn't get my full license until I was 15 but nobody seemed to care, including my parents who would send me on errands. Walking was tough where I grew up with the relentless sun beating down.

When I went to school there were no school busses so I walked.  Elementary school was only a couple of blocks away but High School was a longer hike.

Walked to elementary school, both living in Brooklyn and then subsequently, in New Jersey.  Was a little less than 1/2 mile walk in NJ, probably a bit closer in Brooklyn.

High school, took a bus.  The school was several miles away.

Walked to the station, then train/trains for primary school. About an hour's journey in all.

Secondary school was usually the same, but with a longer walk at each end. Occasionally, dad would drive me to secondary school though. It was a bit nearer though - 40-45mins or so.

You know, when I was in kindergarten, I was to go to school in the morning and then come home during lunch. And this was back in the late 1950s, during the time when kids walked to a neighborhood school, walked home for lunch, and then went back to school.  We didn't have school lunch (remember meal tickets??) until I was in junior high. I was four years old and the next-door neighbor's son was to see that I got to school and then back home safely. Well, one day, I had crossed the street from the kindergarten building and was walking home. Johnny was with his friends, but evidently he was keeping an eye on me. And thank god he was.

A man was in a car across the street from where I was walking. He called to me to come over, that he had candy for me. It was for me and only me. Well, hey, it was candy. I'm four years old. So I started across the street.

And that's when Johnny came running up behind me and grabbed me. He and his friends started yelling. The guy in the car took off. They got me home and Mom called the police. They never did catch the guy.

From 5-11 I walked. The school was in the next street. Not even a five minute walk. After that till I was 18 I went by public transport, bus.

Gosh that's scary Pam!  I don't recall walking alone (in a group of kids) until 3rd grade.  At my first school; Kindergarten through 2nd grade, my Grandparents walked with me because I went to their house before and after school while Mom worked.  After we moved to a different town I went to a co-worker of my mother's house.  The wife had a daycare and a daughter a year younger than me.  In both cases; the school was right down the street.

I don't know; maybe things were different back then. I didn't walk alone. I know that I had to be with Johnny. He was quite a bit older than me. Since I was in kindergarten, I'm thinking he was probably in fourth grade, still fairly young though. There were a bunch of boys and they kept a pretty good eye on me. My parents knew his parents because my Dad and his Dad were both Marines and we were both born on the base. And when my parents moved to that house, they were already living a couple houses down from us.

And I don't remember much about it. I remember it was a big black car and I remember the candy. OF COURSE, I would remember the candy.
And I remember hearing Johnny yelling "NO!" But Johnny and the boys told Mom what happened. She called the police. And for quite a while after that, our parents did walk us to and from school.

I walke. It was 5 minutes to the elementary and then? JH and HS I asked the mile and 3/4 because bus limit was 2 miles. Use those legs. City kids get bussed but I don't know distances but pampering has to stop. Self sufficiency means employing crossing guards and imposing a limit. Such as was done in the town I grew up in.

Until I was in 4th grade, I was at a "day care" before/after school, and we took busses to/from there to school.

5th grade - 10th grade, took the bus from a busstop maybe 1/4 mile from the house, occasionally walked to/from - about 2-3 miles. In high school i occasionally snagged rides with some older friends who drove.

11th-12th grade I drove.
