About 1 month ago, my dad and I rescued a feral cat because we saw that her sister had been it by a car and her sister wouldn't come with us unless we brought the both of them. We named the cat with a broken leg PeeWee. PeeWee's open wound on her broken leg healed within 2 weeks and we took her to the vet. We soon found out that PeeWee not only had a broken leg, but she was packed with tumors. We sadly had to put her down. A week after we put PeeWee down, Betty gave birth to a litter of 4 kittens. They're currently 2 weeks old and are infested with flea's. How do I treat the kittens and the mama for flea's? My dad refuses to go to the vet because "They make you bankrupt.". I don't want the kittens to get anemia and die so please help me out.

I'm sorry I didn't explain this very well, Betty is the mama cat that we rescued with PeeWee.

You're going to need to treat the mother cat Betty, and the home as well. The kittens themselves are far too young for any flea treatment, what you can do for them is either get a flea comb and hand comb the fleas off the kittens or you could give them a bath with plain blue dawn dish soap, if you decide to bathe the kittens be sure the room is warm, the water is warm and you have towels and possibly a hair dryer set to low to dry them. Kittens can be chilled easily if you aren't careful. I suggest Advantage, if you can get to Walmart or any feed supply store, they usually sell it for around $30 or so dollars for a three month supply for the mother cat. I strongly advise you to not buy any Hartz or any other off-brand because with Hartz there have been a lot of cats having bad reactions to it. I simply don't think its worth the risk. As for the home, all the kitty nesting blankets will need to be washed and replaced, if you have carpets, you can sprinkle them with either salt or baking soda then vacuum it up, as it dries the fleas out and the vacuum catches the fleas. I also suggest not to use any flea collar as the kittens could possibly chew it and ingest it. If you have a local Humane Society and explain what has happened they may have some flea topical they could give you, one last thing, do keep the kittens away from the mother for a little while just until her fur is dry from the flea drops. You're right to worry about anemia, the little ones are little, if you can look in the little babies mouth and see the color of their gums, if they are pink, they are fine.

One thing about fleas, it is an ongoing battle, there are flea eggs, flea larvae, adult fleas you see and it takes a bit of time to get them under control.

Using the vacuum is one of the best ways to get rid of fleas. Use it every day and dump the bag or canister.

The Advantage on the mom's neck will do alot to kill the fleas on her and the babies. Then it's a matter of vacuuming and washing to get rid of the eggs.
