What's the best litter for baby kittens?

I just adopted a pair of 8-week-old kittens, and I am worried about what type of kitty litter to use for them. I use unscented clumping litter for my other cats and haven't had any problems with it, but I've been reading that it's not safe for the little ones. They play in the litter box and always seem to have litter on their noses, so I do believe their litter needs to be nontoxic.

What do you use for your kittens?

(It's been 14 years since I've had a baby kitten. I feel like a nervous new Mommy!)

Thanks for your advice!

If you suspect they may eat the litter, although whole 8 weeks, it must obviously be some non clumping.  and that is our advice.

There is one nice and good litter, if you can find it, Blue Buffalo I think, its made from reused crushed walnut shells.   The factory  sells the walnut nuts, and dont have any use of the shell - so they make the litter pellets of them.

Good for cats, and easily disponsible afterwards, no problems for the environment or milieu as whole.

For training baby kittens, I buy sandbox sand at Home Depot!  By the time they are done playing in it and eating t, then they can use what the adults use, but in my case that's corn cob based horse bedding I get at Tractor Supply, called "Best Cob."  40 lbs for 9.99 these days.  It "kinda" clumps but not hard clumps, but very natural and best of all, economical for use with a large number of cats.

I like the idea of playground sand! I used to use that for my hermit crabs. I bought a recycled paper litter because I had to put something in their box, but I hate the stuff.

I used OATMEAL once in a pinch. Big mistake- Unless you like pee flavored hot cereal? x_x

But we normally use paper based litter for kittens, or at least non clumping.

Pee-flavored oatmeal... hmm! Now I'm eying the various cereals in my cupboard! ;)
