I'd advise against using beads - they're just too easily swallowed imo.

I was always told: No string, no beads. String can be swallowed, can't it? ??

My cat goes wonky over emery boards. Go figure. He also went crazier over a home made stitched little heart stuffed with catnip than I'd have thought possible. He literally licked it open, and ate the catnip.

When I was younger, I made cat toys out of cardboard toilet paper rolls...put catnip in it and used duck tape to close it. It was pretty ugly but the cats liked it. They also went bonkers for ping pong balls...not something I'd recommend if you have a dog or small child in the house, though I suppose one could be tucked safely in a taped up toilet paper roll toy.

Love the links, too!! I'm going to check them out as well!!

String is fine if firmly attached as part of a home made wand toy. I would think its also reasonably ok if thickly braided as in macrame.

I would never leave a cat with string unsupervised though - the risks are too great.
