My Bonaparte started sneezing last weekend, and then went off his food. I got him to the vet on Tuesday and he had a fever. She put him on doxycycline antibiotics and Tolfadine to bring his temperature down. I have put him in a room on his own in case there is something infectious. Yesterday he seemed better and ate and drank a little, even did a pee. But today he has not been so good, and is very lethargic, just wanting to sleep. He has eaten and drunk a little, but no pee or poop today, and his temperature is up again to 40.7. I am taking him back to the vet tomorrow. Since his urinary surgery four years ago he has been a very healthy, if overweight, cat, so I am very concerned. The fact that he is sneezing makes me think it is nothing to do with his urinary system, but why is he not peeing at least? I think tomorrow that maybe blood test and ultrasound may be necessary.

Overnight he has peed and pooped, a little at least. And his temperature is down. He is still sneezing. The vet is calling me back as soon as she can and we will discuss what to do.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Glad he peed and pooped! Many vibes he recovers quickly. :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

When you talk to the vet, if you're interested, ask about using colostrum, lactoferrin, and lysine (if he isn't already taking lysine). I found with my FIV+ boy Chumley that 500mg of colostrum daily, 250mg of lactoferrin daily, and bumping lysine to 1,000mg daily clears these infections right up. All help his immune system fight them. Each are split into two, given am and pm.

Thanks Laurie. He is already on Lysine - I use it for my two herpes cats and whenever someone needs an immune boost.

Well, his fever has broken tonight, he is back to normal. The vet and I agreed that we would wait till tomorrow before changing anything, so this is good news. He has eaten a proper meal of almost a whole sachet of food - the first full meal he has had in 5 days. Still sneezing though, but not as much. And still only the one poop. But things are better than they were.

I have just left him at the vet's for xray and ultrasound. He is still blocked this morning, which means he has done one pee and one poop in four days, and was obviously uncomfortable, though not straining. The vet agreed his bladder is full, so they are doing the tests and then will probably express him and flush him out, inserting a catheter if necessary. This was how it all started before, when he was eventually operated on and his whole system cleaned of gravel. That was 4 years ago and since then he has been on a strict urinary diet, so I don't know what we do now. Radical surgery to open the urethra permanently may be the next step for my poor boy.

The good news is that he has no kidney problems and there are no masses in his abdomen (my worst fear). His blood levels are normal. BUT he does have a urinary obstruction which they are flushing out. They are keeping him in tonight and depending on how he eats and pees overnight, I may get him back tomorrow. The problem is what to do then. He is already on a special urinary diet, for 4 years now, with low calcium water to drink indoors, and I am not aware of anything else I can do to prevent the formation of stones.

He is an indoor/outdoor cat, and of course eats and drinks sometimes outside, a great hunter of mice and voles. He hates being indoors too long in daytime and will not use a covered litter box. He has an open one in the hall that he uses overnight if he needs it, but much prefers to go outside. If forced to stay in, he will spray on furniture or the fireplace, yowl and scratch the door to bits. He came to me as an adult stray 8 years ago, and in all that time I have not been able to wean him of all his outdoor habits. He is an incredibly affectionate cat, both indoors and outdoors, and will search for a lap in house or garden, but the independent stray streak is still there. He tends to ignore the other cats, but will fight if he feels his dignity or wellbeing is threatened. And they don't much like him. It is honestly not an option to keep him indoors for ever, with 10 other cats in a limited space.

So I need to do some more research, and as always, if anyone has any ideas, then I am glad to hear them.

Oh, no. I'm just seeing this and sending mega :vibes: for Bonaparte. Hemingway had the radical surgery 4 or 5 years ago and it was a complete success, with no dribbling, recurrence of gravel or problems developing while he was out on his own for most of last year. He's not on a special diet or meds.

I've got him home. They are hopeful that it is just a one-off, and we got it before any damage was done. So I will keep him in for a few days so I can monitor his peeing, and then he can go out again. I don't want to put him through any more surgery, but of course the option (or necessity) is always a possibility.

Poor Bonaparte. I'm glad you didn't have to have surgery again. :vibes: for his continued health. He's a lucky cat to be living a life where he's monitored and cared for now.

I am not sure he appreciates his luck! He is pretty angry right now at being in a cage. I of course, am delighted he is feeling well enough to be angry - last week he just lay in it and didn't care where he was. Tomorrow I will let him out into the room.
