I have a male cat who is a little over 4 years old, about 3 weeks go he became very ill. It started one night where he started sneezing constantly, the following day he became very lethargic and stopped eating and drinking, we took him to the vet and they prescribed him antibiotics and a appetite stimulant. We had to manually feed him through a syringe for the next week and the medications the vet prescribed had virtually no affect on him. We took him back to the vet and had blood work and an ultra sound done, his blood-work came back completely normal but the ultrasound uncovered he had a kidney infection, the vet gave him 2 different medications through injections which was supposed to have him back to normal within a couple of days. Its been a week since then and he is still not eating or drinking at all unless we force feed him through syringes, and he developed this partial cough or sneeze, it like he's about to cough but just rapidly exhales air every time we touch his stomach or chest area. The vet claimed he had never seen anything like this partial cough he has. At this point I'm not too sure what to do, he's not lethargic like before but he still wont eat or drink and every-time we try to syringe feed him now he becomes very aggressive.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

It sounds like he may have something actually caught in his throat which would explain why he won't eat or drink and why he has that half cough.  It could be a thread or fiber, something that doesn't show on x-ray, and may have nothing to do with the kidney infection.

Since your current vet is baffled by the cat's condition, you might try seeing a feline specialist if your vet is not one, and see if there is an AAHA accredited veterinary clinic in your area by searching at the following link:

https://www.aaha.org/pet_owner/about_aaha/hospital_search/default.aspx

If he doesn't eat or drink, he could go into liver failure, so you really need to do something quickly.  You may need to have a feeding tube inserted.  Here is a link to two articles about how that can save a cat's life.

To me it sounds like he was toxicated. If he ate something that is toxic (like a Lily for example) cats can get acute kidney failure.

Did he had an infusion?

Did they check the kidney values too?

I don't know about the cough, but I do have experience with kidney failure , but I am not sure if he has kidney failure..Is there another vet you can go to for a second opinion?
Make sure he is at least drinking something meanwhile! Not drinking is more dangerous than not eating for cats.
Have you tried to stimulate it by water fountains etc? Or cat milk? it is very important he gets enough moisture.

Whats happening now with this kitty?  Any changes?  Is he eating anything yet, or are you having any luck syringe feeding him again?

Hey guys thanks for the reply, unfortunately he's still not eating. This cough has baffled every vet IV taken him to, I'm leaning towards putting him down now because we can longer feed him, he is becoming vicious when we go around him. I think he grew to resent us from all the forced syringe feeding.

So they've checked for a blockage or partial blockage in his throat or esophagus which might be causing the cough?  I'm still stuck on how an ultra sound can see a kidney infection and yet his blood work be normal.

Does he even approach his food dish?  does he do this half cough all the time, or what prompts it?  Does he do it when you are syringe feeding him?  Did you find a Feline Only Vet?  When you have managed to get food into him, can he keep it down, or does he vomit it back up?

Have you considered a feeding tube? It should be relatively inexpensive to get installed and feeding  through the tube is very simple, much easier than syringe feeding. Kitty Kollar makes collars just for the tube which makes it even easier to do. Your vet may have them as well.

Hope he is eating now..It is kind of weird that there is no vet with a clue.
Have you tried Hills A/D? Contains lots of calories , it is basically meant for pets whom have to recover from surgery e.g. However, also if a cat refuses to eat, you can try this, most cats love it. But make sure he does not start eating too fast since he hasn't been eating for a while now. It's important to build up the food intake.
