Is it normal for a 6 month old cat to poo which is soft?

Soft poop is never a great sign. The most likely culprits are worms or other parasites (such as giardia/coccodia). After getting that checked out (by a VET) I'd look for dietary causes. Some cats find some foods hard to digest, or may even have an allergy. Overfeeding can be another possible cause, as can excess fat in the diet. Really, the first stop has to be the vet. Its unlikely to be serious, but you need to start eliminating causes before you can move forward.

Could just be you feeding some food which your kitty can't take? Perhaps rotate food?

That is very possible. I wouldn't feel the need to go rushing back to the vet unless things worsen markedly. The next thing to look at is food: some cats are sensitive to certain ingredients. For example, my girl doesn't do well with beef or guar gum - nothing wrong with either of these in principle, its just that she gets very soft when she has them. Other cats have a problem with potatoes, or pea protein, or even chicken. Look at the ingredients of what you're feeding - you may find a link between giving one particular food and him getting softer poop.

Another dietary thing to try is adding a little plain canned pumpkin to his diet - 3tsp a day is the usual amount. Pumpkin is a very gentle fibre that is great at normalising bowel movements.

Don't panic - you've done everything right so far. It's just a case of pinpointing the cause now.
