hi. my name is jeff. this is going to be long.

it's now the rainy season here in phuket. one night i came home from a walk when i heard a small meow near the bushes. i flashed a light and saw a kitten. about a month old. wet and shivering. no mother in sight. he was just sitting the meowing. i wondered where his mother is, i didnt took him then because i thought his mom will come back for him later. and it stopped raining. so i went home to get some face towels, went back and placed them near him. built him a little nest. the next day i came home from work and i almost forgot about the little guy. so i went and check and still no mother. odd. just one orphan kitty under the bushes. i wondered where his mom went. i didnt know cats abandon thier young. so i picked him up and took him home. i pat him dry, fed him (he ate like an elephant) i made him a little bed. i watched the little guy sleep. immediately i love him right there. i decided to make him my own.

thats where i need help with kitten behaviors.

now this is not my first cat. i have an american bobtail named niao. we've been together for 5 years now. but when she came to me she was already about a year old. she's female.

so this is my first time with kittens. i hope you can help me guys.

now, i placed his own litter box near where he sleeps, but he seems to poop everywhere. on the floor. the sofa. sometimes in the litter box. it's like he doesn't care where he poops. do i need to teach a kitten to poop in the litterbox? will he figure it out himself?

and another thing, i mentioned i have a female american bobtail. well she's not too happy about the newcomer. she hisses at him. growls. slaps the poor guy. i read something online that i have to separate them. put them in different rooms for at least two weeks. but my house is small. i dont have the space. and they also said i need to buy those spray things i dont know. but food is the only thing a can afford right now. will my old cat hurt the new kitten?

thank you guys and sorry for my english

Hi, and welcome to TCS :wavey: I'm sorry for the delayed response - things have been very busy here and sometimes posts get missed.

Do you have any idea how old Miw Miw is? This article might help you work it out. [article="32740"][/article]

Kittens need to be taught to use a litterbox - if they're very young (as I suspect Miw Miw is), they just don't understand about it at all - they're still expecting their mom to be looking after them. Its best to use a shallow tray (such as a baking tray) in the beginning, as its easier for them to get in and out of. When litter training, the ideal situation is to have the kitten in on small, easily cleaned room (a small bathroom is often used), with many, many more trays than you'd think they'd need. The idea is to make it almost impossible for them to miss a tray. As they get older they make the connection, and once they're consistently going in the tray/box you can go down to a more normal number of boxes (usually one per cat plus one extra), and allow the kitten access to a larger area.

There's a cat litter called Dr Elsey's Kitten Attract - I don't know if you can get it in Thailand, but it's specially designed for litter training kittens and it would be ideal for your situation.

Miw Miw will need worming medicine and flea treatments, but be sure to get them from your vet, as not all preparations are safe for young kittens. He'll need vaccinations too, and it would be a good idea to have him tested for FIV and FeLV - you don't want him passing anything onto Niao. Its best to keep the two of them separate for now anyway - proper introductions (so that the two cats get to know each other with the least possible amount of stress) take time, and need to be gradual.

Your kitten sounds young @nui1227  .  Are they managing with solid food OK or was it some kind of milk you offered?   If managing solid food it could be small for age but maybe a little older than 3 weeks.  Not needing help to poop on their own also suggests this to me - so lots of attention to try and get the poop to happen in the litter is a must.  Low side ones like Columbine says.  If you can't get small litter trays then disposable foil baking trays do well too - anything liquid proof you can put some litter or dirt in to encourage burrying poop and pee.  If he has been outside he might not understand what litter is and dirt be more familiar - cheeper too.

Your older cat could harm a small kitten, yes, and also this little one could be carrying parasites or illnesses you do not want your existing cat to catch, again as Columbine has said so if possible keep them apart.  The kitten could stay in a large pen if you could get something like that given your home does not have lots of rooms to do this with.  Plenty of time to spoil your older cat too so she does not feel neglected but take care and try to wash your hands between touching them.

Thank you guys. Miw says hi. :)

Yesterday we went to the vet for a checkup free of charge thanks to my friend. Flea treatment and deworming for miw as well as a check up for Niao. we will be going back next month for immunizations. I can rest my heart i got scared lol. thank you for the heads up guys.

as for Miw i did the tin foil trick but doesnt seem to work. even if i place them very near his bed he just seems to look for the sofa, start sniffing and then do his business. the house is really stinky now. i dont know what to do. i hope he catches up

You need to get an enzymatic cleaner to clean up the messes. That's the only thing that will fully eradicate the stink. Part of the problem now will be that places other than the litterbox smell like the 'right' places to go as far as Miw Miw is concerned. The enzymatic cleaner will fix that problem for you too.

If he is regularly going by the sofa, can you put a litterbox there for him - exactly where he's choosing to go. As he gets the idea, you can gradually move the box to a more appropriate location. I know its not ideal, but its better than constant 'accidents'.

Miw Miw is GORGEOUS! :heart3::heart3::heart3: So glad the vet visit went well.

I have one final link for you [article="32366"][/article]

Keep updating - we love happy stories like this one :D :nod:

Miw is a sweetie!
So tiny.   You have a good friend there, helping you get Miw and Niao to the vet.  Little ones can get sick so fast from parasites so great to know the vet has got this in hand.

I hope Miw learns about litter soon.

I don't know if you can get enzyme cleaners where you are.  If not - depending on whether it would harm the surfaces / fabrics or not you can also clear the proteins and fats from urine using a combination of soaking / and rinsing out a concentrated biological laundry washing solution followed by soaking with surgical spirit, and then drying out.   It's easier on hard and non porous surfaces obviously - works well for hard floors (which is what I have used it on) and natural fabrics which are not coloured.   I mixed up 2 cups of biological laundry powder with a 2 gallon bucket of water and swept over the floor I was cleaning, left it so soak for about 15 minutes, then wiped off followed by about 5 washes with plain water.   Then wiped over with surgical spirit.  I've used it on non-patterned white vinyl and on worn /polished  concrete floor.
