I began giving my Tigger 75ml SubQ fluids, 2 days on, then one off a week ago, due to a Creatinine level of 4.9.

Her Creatinine went down to 3.0, but she stopped eating and became extremely ill. I noticed that the last time I gave her fluids, they weren't absorbing.

I notified my vet, who recommended temporarily discontinuing fluids. Today Tigger is starting to improve, and I feel strongly that overhydration is the cause of her illness. Tigger is only 4.5 lbs, so I think the amount of fluid was too much for her.

Has anyone else dealt with this? If so, how do you balance the need to keep kidney values down vs risk of overhydration?

Can anyone with a small CKD cat tell me how much fluids and what frequency you give your cat?

Tigger? When it comes to cats its every other day unless the vet says otherwise. I give Annabel an aspirin every other day like humans do for a heart condition. She's healthier for it.low dose. I don't give her saline without first assessing whether there is a need. Usually not but given her current virus I have it on hand if needed. She's my guide. Don't overuse it. Cats drink water fine but if saline is called for never overdo it nor anything else. Keep your cat alive

How long did it take for her body to absorb the fluids?

I have a 4.5 pound kidney cat, and we give her 125 to 150 ml Lactated Ringers twice a week and should probably do it more, because she's pretty dry in between.  I also add water to every meal (wet food, 6 - 7 meals per day), plus she drinks on her own, as most kidney cats do.

I DO think the only reason overhydration would become an issue is if she has a heart problem as well.  Has she been diagnosed?  Or perhaps it depends on what type of fluids she is getting in her sub-qs?

It took her at least 24 hours to process the fluids. She has never been diagnosed with a heart problem. Part of the problem is that she was on a steroid, and we increased the dosage. Of course, steroids can cause fluid retention as well. For whatever reason, she couldn't handle all the fluids we were giving her.

In my recent research I found a great article on fluid retention from sub q fluids:

hate the steroids-predisolone. got a 2nd opinion & my male was put on Cerenia which is much safer & can be used long term 2 dosages weekly. Works very quickly.

My Senior Cat Patina now 16 years old needs to be on fluids daily she weighs in at approx. 5 or so lbs and we have to give her the 100ml I believe it is each day, it feels like a little golf ball under her skin. She is a very good and understanding patient thankfully, I am more a wreak having to do this. I am now trying to see if I can purchase the fluid, needles and line, online as going through the Vet is very pricey. I hope and pray your cat, my cat and all of our cats do well.

Only really need to worry about fluid overload when giving IV fluids and as mentioned above especially in heart patients. Normal daily basal fluid rate for a cat her size is 180 mls. This is just a maintenance fluid amount for a “healthy adult cat” Does not factor in additional losses due to kidney disease. I would not be concerned about her fluid amount.

What symptoms was your kitty displaying that made you concerned??
