I have a 3 month old male kitten that grew up with older cats in the house. I just got him recently and decided to get a playmate for him. I decided upon another male kitten. However, the opportunity to adopt a 1 yr old, already vaccinated/neutered cat has presented itself and I'd really like to take it. I have to get my kitten neutered so it helps not having to worry about making an appointment and checking funds for another cat as well. However, I wanted a playmate for my kitten and I was wondering if the age difference was too much? Would a younger kitten be better suited for that role? I just don't want one cat to outgrow the play phase, as the whole point is for them to meet the play/social needs that I can't meet due to work.

I'm not entirely sure but I can tell you from my own experience. I have a five year old cat, Mark, he's still fairly playful when it's just him, but has also grown quite lazy the past few years. However, I brought him to my moms house for Christmas two years ago and my sister had brought her new young kittens home. At first my cat was not happy about them but he pretty quickly bonded with the male kitten Albert and the two of them would play together all night. It was like Albert brought out Mark's inner kitten.

Do you know anything about the 1 year olds behavior? My one year old Yuki is still very playful, but some cats might be less playful at that time, maybe ask his previous owner?

Thanks for the response :) they said he played with an older cat they had. I haven't gotten the chance to meet him yet, so not sure how he acts in person.

Sounds like he's still playful! Since he's already neutered and in need of a good home it doesn't seem like a bad idea! Maybe your younger guy will make him feel young again, and he can pass down his kitty wisdom
