Transitioning a kitty from dry to wet food

I have a senior cat who eats virtually exclusively wet food. (only dry food is if he gets a nibble from the other kitty's dish) I also have a young cat who eats both canned and dry food. I would like to transition the younger kitty and get rid of the dry food, except for rare occasions (like if we're gone and want something that's less perishable to leave for the pet sitter).

The senior cat loves canned food and gobbles it down. The young kitty will eat some canned food, but doesn't seem to be quite as enthused about it as the older cat. I can get him to eat it, I just have to give him small portions and be patient.

I do have about 9 lbs of grain free Taste of the Wild dry food that I want to use up and don't want to waste. How should I do it? Should I leave out maybe 1/4 cup of dry food per day and feed the rest canned until the dry food is gone? Or is it a better bet to keep the dry food in the freezer in case I need it for a future vacation? How long does cat food keep in the freezer?

I'd just continue feeding the dry until it's used up. You might want to look at switching them both to timed meals now, as that will make the transition to 100% wet easier when the time comes. Another option would be to switch to timed meals just before all the dry is gone - that way you have a little dry as a back up in case your younger guy tries a hunger strike in protest!
