Cat doesn't know how to use a scratching post

Hello,

I have recently adopted an abused cat and he doesnt know how to use a scratching post, Horizontal or vertical, but instead decides to scratch the carpet, any suggestions?

Why do you think he doens't know how to use it? I think all cats know how to use a scratching post since it is just natural behavior to scratch. The place of the scratching post however is very important.

What kind of scratching post did you buy? Experiment with different materials. Since he likes the carpet, perhaps he'll like a horizontal carpet scratcher. Spray some catnip on it. Place it in the spots where he always scratches. You might have to play with him to get him to start scratching it - use a wand toy or any of his favourite toys and lead him towards the post and let him catch it there.
