My dad adopted a cat last year and really has no idea on the cats health background unfortunately. the owner died and my friend didn't know too much about the cat. She believes he is 8 but I think he is older.  My dad took the cat to the vet months ago and the vet said the cat may have a cavity and needs teeth cleaned.  Since then, my dad is convinced the cat has diabetes casuse the cat drinks a lot of water and pees a lot in the box.  The vet said the drinking a lot of water could be from the cavity.

I stopped at my parents house and saw Sunny was walkng funny.. My mom believes he sprained it when he jumped into the bathtub. I picked up the cat and he didn't scream didn't wince at all.  Can a cat sprain a muscle and not show any signs of pain? My dad believes its caused by diabetes. I went on you tube and its hard to say if it is the diabetic walk.  It irriates me cause I have to cats, Johnny Mittens (who is having his teeth pulled costing me $1700.00 next week and am the type to jump and bring cat to vet right when there is a problem). I understand my dad doesnt have a lot of money but I know my vet will do payment plan if I ask on his behalf.  he can even bring him to the Fox Clinic.  I have my cats surgury next week but will bring Sunny to vet next week for him and see what she says based on the walk. I hope my pet insurance covers my cat's procedure and I have a lawyer who will write a letter to Pets best for me for free :)

anyone know if a cat can have a sprain or funny walk from muscle pull and not be in pain?

I wonder if he could have an inner ear infection?

Also, can blood work show a cats true age?

I don't understand what you mean by walking funny.

Do you mean a limp? Favoring one leg? Hind end swaying?

To me when a cat is older and drinks alot of water and pees alot, it is indicating kidneys, which is extremely common in older cats.

In fact, the older the cat, you can almost guarantee at least some amt of function loss at some point, some before others, but it is seen in nearly every older/senior cat.

Get dad to bite the bullet, get a vet appt, it will cost the office visit fee, and a blood panel done. Cost for bloodwork ranges from $65.00-$150.00 for the more expensive vets.

I do not think the cat is diabetic because of the water intake. An untreated cat with diabetes appears in pretty bad shape actually. It's always hard on a cat's body and organs to have anything out of whack for any length of time.

Speaking of expensive..........$1700.00??! WOW.

Have you considered getting a different vet's estimate?

Granted, I pay $100.00 for a full mouth extraction with my rescue's vet, who is currently gone for a month so I had to use my alternative vet which still only charged $300.00.

For normal people not in rescue though, the cost is usually between $700.00-$900.00, I think the most I've heard quoted was nearly $1200.00 and he is known to be very pricey.

Just saying.....if your cat has insurance it should be covered, from what I know, but obviously can't say that for sure, depending on what coverage you have.

Cat has an appointment Aug 12 for teeth clean and they do blood work. It's like he is favoring one part of his body but not meowing in pain.

The vet I'm using is highly recommended and feel most comfortable using. One vet said 1499 but wanted blood work at 390 and heart tests so if was over 2000.

My pet insurance says gingiostomafitus is covered but they don't cover dental so they prob will deny it but makes no sense as this is treat net for disorder

I'm pro rescue but y do single pet owners have to spend more? It kinda shows y so many pets are surrendered.

Wow, you must live in an expensive area or there aren't many vets people can choose from, which is sometimes why the elevated costs.

You might want to look further in to details of what is covered, I know that cleanings, broken tooth, extractions type things which are routine dental are not covered (unfortunately) but a medical condition such as stomatitis, tumor/cyst, may be or should be.

Not sure about this of course, as it depends of the carrier/coverage and so on.

I couldn't agree with you more! It floors me the difference in cost between a vet who helps rescues and a vet who helps individuals. Why the huge diff in costs? Rescues are non profits, yes, but how about the majority of pet owners who are unable to afford proper vet care due to these inflated costs?!

I mentioned above about the vet who charged me $300.00 for a full mouth extraction? This was not a cat in my rescue group, it was for someone who contacted me pleading for help for her own cat who needed this done per her vet but unable to afford, so the cat was suffering.

So I sent him to my rescue vet, she was so grateful as was her cat :) So believe me, I feel the same way.

Same thing with low cost spays/neuters. They make it so hard to afford for average/lower income families. Sad.

I live in CT-very expensive state. If anyone on here lives in CT,knows a vet that would entertain a montly payment plan without having to use credit cards or care credit Let me know.  I am set on his surgery with this VET on August 5 and my Uncle is helping me so I think I am all set.  I have a feeling this vet would but the veterinary practice he is doing the surgery will not allow it. It is sad.  If My Uncle was not loaning me this money< I would have to max out the credit card I have pay too much interest.  care credit would not give me a credit increase. idiots.
