We have a seven year old male cat, he is neutered he is also pretty high strung and needs a lot of attention, we've alway joked that he's needs attention like a dog.  We also have a 6 year old female cat and a another 3 year old male (neutered), we live in a two story two bedroom house, they have plenty of space and plenty of litter boxes.  This is the second place we've moved to with all three of them, we've been here for a year, and we've only just started having this problem.

A few months ago after my boyfriend's parents came to visit we noticed urine in the corner of our living room.  We cleaned it up and got them all vet checked (all were fine), since we didn't know who is was we did a deep cleaning of their litter boxes, the areas around their litter boxes, and hoped that would take care of it. It seemed to work, no more problems.  Then a month later we had two friends stay the night and, this time Bruce the cat in question came into the living room when I was on the couch looked me in the eye meowed then proceeded to spray/pee on the bottom (empty) shelf of one of our bookshelves.   I say spray/pee because he does it standing up, it sprays straight back, but there is a lot of it.  Now we knew who it was, and we were also starting to wonder if his behavior had anything to do with us having company over.  I bought him one of those calming collars, we got the air defuser version of the calming stuff too.

Skip forward a few months to now.  We have company over they arrived yesterday, nothing about them or any of the other times was overly rowdy. This morning after the first night of our company's 4 night stay I was in the bathroom washing my face, he came in meowed at me, and then proceeded to turn around and spray the linen closet door.

This has to be related to us having company over, he never does this when we don't have company over. I'm kind of at my whits end I love the hell out of this cat and I don't know what to do to help him or deter him.  Please help!

Oh dear.. it does sound like it's the company thing since you've had him vet checked.

I'm honestly not sure what you can do except to keep him in an enclosed safe space when you have visitors.

We do have a comprehensive article about territorial spraying.   Have a look through it and see if there is anything you've missed.

And welcome to TCS!
