wierd eating habits

I know. I ask a lot of questions. I have never owned a cat and just trying to be the best pet parent I can be.

Comet won't eat his food unless he's scooped it out and put it on the floor. I'm tired of stepping on cat food in the dark at 2 am when I go for a drink of water. What gives?

Some cats just have odd eating habits Mabe your cat doesn'tl ike to stick his face into a bowl? Instead of a bowl, use a shallow pale or saucer instead. Or use a tray (pet stores sell pet trays) and place the food directly on that. Neither of these will help much if your cat still moves the food onto the floor to eat. Move the bowls/plates somewhere else to minimize the food you might step on. Or keep a bottle of water next to your bed for easier access.
