We just got a kitten and our older cat isnt warming up

So we have had our cat Luigi for 5 years and he is about 9 years old. We have dog sat and had to have a little dog live in our house for a week and after a day or two Luigi warmed up to him. He also had to stay at my cousins house, they have a cat and a dog, and Luigi took awhile to warm up to the dog but after a day or two warmed up to the cat. He is extremely friendly and always runs to greet you even if you're a stranger.

But we just got a 10 week old kitten and Luigi HATES it. He is declawed so he cant hurt the kitten but he often growls, hisses, and swats at the kitten. I understand that it's gonna take a bit to warm up but I would like so advice! When we're sleeping should we make sure to separate them? KC (our kitten) always runs off after Luigi hisses and Luigi doesn't make an effort to chase him so I think they're fine but I just want some advice.

When no ones home should we separate them until they're used to each other?

Also KC HATES absolutely HATES his kitty litter. Any advice on that? Every time we put him in it he dashes out, I've even tried putting him in and holding him there but he cries and scurries out of my grasp. Any reason why he does this? We just got him (7/31/2015) and he hasnt used the bathroom but has ate and drank a ton. Any way to make him like the kitty litter? or an alternative?

KC should have his own room for now, and he and Luigi shouldn't be having face to face meetings at this stage. Introductions are a slow process, but patience really is key to keep stress to a minimum and achieve the eventual goal of a calm, fully integrated household.
