Hello everyone!

I have some questions related to the use of L-Lysine in cats.

First some background, my 10 year old cat has been constantly sick of upper respiratory infections for quite some time now, after many visits to the vet even he seemed to be surprised that my girl would never fully recover from this infections, he suggested me to look for something "alternative" and after some research I found out about L-Lysine.

I live in a small city in Mexico and the only thing I could get was L-Lysine pills from GNC, I've been giving those for 6 days to my cat, 250mg every 12 hours. I cut the 500mg pill in two, crush it till it's powder and mix it with a small amount of wet food.

My first question is: when can I expect to see considerable decreasing of symptoms?

In her case the symptoms are snot and sneezing as well as a runny eye (just one). Luckily she's got no fever or apparent discomfort in all this time. Everyone at home agrees that there's been some improvement, she definitely sneezes less now, but based on what I had read I was expecting a much faster and more noticeable recovery. For how long should I keep the 500mg daily dosage?

I ignore how good is the quality of GNC's L-Lysine but, like I mentioned, it's all I could find. And now that I'm talking about it, the ingredients contained in the pills are: L-Lysine monohydrochloride, Cellulose, Silicon Dioxide and  Magnesium Sterate of vegetable source.

It also mentions to contain no sugar, no starch, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours, no preservatives, sodium free, no wheat, no gluten, no corn, no soy, no dairy and yeast free.
Should I worry about the ingredients contained by the pills? I did some research and I think that cellulose is the only ingredient that is not that good for cats but I don't know if it's BAD for them.

So far she's been acting perfectly normal, she's only threw up twice right after eating the wet food with the L-Lysine but I don't think it was because of the L-Lysine, I'm guessing it would have happened every single time if it was bad for her? Also, it is not rare that she throws up every once in a while right after eating her (dry) food.

I hope you can help me out here, I really wanna see her free of sneezes and snot.

Thanks in advance.

It can take up to a month to notice any improvement with Lysine.  If she's currently sneezing or having upper respiratory infections, up the dose to 500 mg twice a day.  Once she gets better, then you can try cutting back to 250mg twice a day.  If you're able, try to find a grain-free food to feed her.  That might also help.  I'm not sure what your choices are where you live or what you can obtain online, but that would be a good dietary change to help her as well.

Thanks for your answer Stephanietx.

Because of my location it can be hard to get a hold of certain things and sometimes online options get too expensive for me, but I'll start looking up for other options of food.

Do you think that the other ingredients contained in the L-Lysine I got could affect negatively my cat if I take the dosage up to 1000mg a day?
