Hi there, so, I've recently been helping my friend take care of a lot of little barn kittens. So far we have only found 7 of the kittens, but we know there is more. The problem is that we don't have the money to take them ALL in and have them checked out.

Right now, we have been cleaning their eyes and nose with warm water and Vetericyn. Their eyes end up matted shut from a mucus like substance. It's rather gross. But I feel bad for them, so we help out. Their nose is also all plugged up and congested to the point where they have a hard time breathing.

I have already used Vetericyn, and it's helping with their eyes, and I plan on using a warm boiled salt water substance for their nose to see if it helps.

Does anyone have any other fairly cheap remedies we could try?

I'm almost positive that it's not a bacterial infection, just a little respiratory infection.

Thank you so much!

Saline water is useful in many situations, yes.  Even hospitals use it.   Terramycin oinment is common to use against goopy eyes, I think its possible to get OTC too.

But if you are plenty sure its no bacterial infection, common home remedies are better.  Overdoing antibiotics, especielly when you dont have real clue, isnt wise nor good.

Using a tea solution is qute common.  Or even some herb tea solution, alike camomille achillea - called also for camomille millefolium, I think - or similiar...  (its the latin name, Im not sure on the english).

Its wise of you to build up a bank of knowledge  as such, but in home remedies especielly.

Its also wise if you could build up a cooperation with some vet nearby.   Its nice when you dont need to guess wildy what to try with, but you can phone and as a vet.  Or even, make a visit, hopefully cheaply, and get that cat examined...

I mean, those precious little barn kitten, they didnt fell down straight from above.  There are surely at least several semiferale female barn cats, and probably a couple of toms.

Your problem wont be over, before you had spayed all of these...

So you will stop the next wave of these kittens in need of your good hearlty help...

So you will need to cooperate either with some rescue group, doing much TNR, and or a cheap spaying clinic. - Especielly as you tell us you arent made of money...

I would guess, such cheap spaying clinic are also willing to do some other basic exam and treatmets, cheaper than a typical  private vet would do.

So, ask question on Forums alike ours, but also, try and seek some cheap vet nearby...  And or a rescue group / shelter working with adopting out fostered barn cats.

- If you cooperate with such a shelter, you could perhaps be such a foster home under their protection - you do the job, they help you with vet care and some other costs, and when the time comes, help you find adoption homes....

Some tips.

Tx a lot for caring!

Good luck!
