I created an account to ask about this because I can't seem to find an answer one way or another and I'm hoping other people with cats can weigh in. I have 4 cats. I know thats a lot of cats, but it sort of makes sense if you were there. There is an explanation below if you want to read it, but basically 2 of the cats are mine, one is both my ex and mine, and one is just his. I still live with my ex which works out really well, but I'm going to be moving out of state (to Seattle, WA) and I would prefer to have a roommate. My ex says he doesn't want to split up the cats so I should just take all them. From what I've seen I can afford a nice 2 bedroom right downtown with a roommate, but I'm not sure if I can really expect to find some one to live with me and 4 cats.

I could insist he keep his cat, but I'm not sure 3 cats is that much better. I could get an ok apartment outside of downtown by myself, but I really would rather have a roommate. Also I kind of want a roommate with out pets because I have enough myself, but I'm worried that will just make it even harder to find someone.

Any suggestions would be great.

Why I have four cats:

I have been rescuing stray cats and dogs since I was 12 and I've gotten really good at helping feral cats learn to be loving and cuddly cats, so I often kept a cat for a few months before finding it a home. I had a permanent cat when I met my boyfriend (now ex) and when we moved in together he decided we should keep a cat I found so we would have a cat baby together (because we were 21 and our college romance was going to last forever guys!!). A while later we moved into a bigger apartment and I was raising a litter of kittens whose mom died and I decided to keep one (because kitten!) and I'd never had my own kitten so it seemed ok even though we both agreed 3 cats was pushing it a little. The last cat was entirely his decision. I had dropped her off at the vet and I couldn't get off work in time to pick her up so I asked him. Well when I asked if his aunt and uncle had decided if they wanted the cat he told me that he was keeping her. We fought about it a little because I didn't want to keep her, but I gave in after a while. So that is how I ended up with four cats.

You might have more luck finding a roommate who likes cats than a landlord who's ok with four cats. But as long as you take care of the cats, the apartment doesn't smell, or your roommate isn't expected to help with cat expenses, I don't see a huge issue. Some people love cats.
