Hi everyone!

My 8 year old female cat had bladder stones when she was 2 years old. She had blood in her urine, and the vet took x-rays, that was how she diagnosed with bladder stones. She was put on Hills S/D canned food to dissolve the stones in her bladder, then switched to Hills C/D canned food for preventing. She hasn’t flared up since.

Because my other cat has IBD, I’ve been reading a lot of the threads on here and catinfo.org, and I started to have doubts about prescription foods...
I am wondering if I need to change her diet… I still feed her C/D.

My question is do I still need to feed my cat a prescription food even though she had bladder stones a long time ago?

Also what brands of canned food do you recommend for a cat who had a history of bladder stones?

Any input would be appreciated, thank you!

Currently do you feed the IBD cat one food, and the cat that had stones the RX food?

IMHO, if it's working the way it is, I wouldn't change it.  Bladder Stones aren't something to mess around with.  Neither is IBD.  RX food is normally yucky, but it does have it's place, and helping prevent stones is one of those places.  Just don't feed it to the IBD cat

All that being said, here is a thread that might be right up your alley:  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/254489/alternatives-to-expensive-urinary-so-food#post_3346331

Even though it has been a long time, your cat will always be prone to bladder stones. It's just how her body works. Her urine is just prone to crystalizing.

I would definitely keep her on the prescription diet. Same with the IBD kitty!

Both diets are balanced nutritional diets. I work for a Veterinary office - I have heard all of my Vets tell clients this. There is nothing wrong with keeping them on it long term/life long. Don't let people scare you. Are they fancy? Do they have oatmeal, blueberries, and oils? Not really, no. But, they are functional and medically necessary for the conditions of yours, and other peoples, furry friends! ^-^

Animals are the same as people in the way that they all have different bodies and different reactions to things. As where the diets work well for most, some cats or dogs won't respond to them. That's just life, and that's where owners start trying new approaches.

But, If your cats are doing well on the diet with no issues - I wouldn't rock the boat!

Hi mrsgreenjeens and Relienna,
Thank you so much for your kind advice!

I feed my IBD cat LID canned foods, and my other cat who had stones is on C/D. Thank you for the link, too! I’ll read into it.

Has anyone fed your cat who had bladder stones Iams Veterinary Formula Urinary-S Low pH/S Canned Cat Food, or/and Iams Veterinary Formula Urinary-O Plus Moderate pH/O Canned Cat Food, or/and Purina Pro Plan Focus Adult Urinary Tract Health?

My cat is on Hill’s c/d canned food. But she was just diagnosed with ear infections. I’m guessing it was from food allergies, so I’m thinking of try a different canned food for urinary health.

I like that both Iams Veterinary Formula Urinary-S and Iams Veterinary Formula Urinary-O don’t contain carrageenan nor guar gum.

Any opinions on this? Thank you so much!

Bumping this up since you haven't had any responses, although since you are asking a very specific question, you might want to start your own thread
