I've been thinking about this and would like other suggestions.  If a train derailed or we had a fire, how would we evacuate our pets safely? How would we keep them from getting lost?  I have two adult cats, a kitten, and a really foolish Border Collie/Great Pyranees who weighs 100 pounds.  I'm disabled.  I just asked my daughter to check to make sure all the harnesses for the cats fit, and that we have all the leashes at hand. Our cat carriers were left in the weather and deteriorated.  So....what kinds of things do you to be prepared in case you have to leave your home with no notice?

I would absolutely need other people to help me or I couldn't possibly handle all four of our animals, with or without a good carrier for the cats.  Need to leash-train the kitten for safety's sake I guess.

Besides food and water, what pet supplies should go into an evacuation kit?

One thing the ASPCA list doesn't mention is to pack all medicines and related supplies that your pet is currently on, such as asthma inahlers and the inhaler device and insulin and insulin syringes and (if one is testing at home) the blood glucose meter and test strips and lancets. A pet who needs daily medicine may become ill and without the necessary medicine.

Pets should be wearing their collars with tags and / or have a registered microchip with updated contact information.

I've heard that if it's an immediately life threatening situation, using pillow cases can be easier/faster than fiddling with leashes and carriers. Obviously not a pleasant experience for cats or owner, and something that comes with a certain risk of injury, and only a temporary solution. But if there was a fire or a flood and no other way of quickly containing multiple animals it's how I'd get them out. They can be puton harnesses once away from danger.

I shudder to think what I would have to do to get my cat. I don't know If I would even be able to catch her in time to evacuate! The first thing she would do is bolt somewhere where I cant reach her. She has her tags and collar though. If I could catch her, great. If not, I'd have to do my best to chase her out before evacuating myself. Anybody have any ideas on maybe how to catch a terrified cat?
