She has the cutest little markings on her face.

Sooo I really hope she is more than a month.  I just realized if she isn't she will give birth right around the first day of school
Thankfully we homeschool so I can work around it.

It sounds as though you are very flexible, which is good since we don't know how far along she is. From the looks of the picture, she still has a ways to go and will get much bigger :).

Yep, I guess I will just put together a unit about kitty care.  My daughter does want to be a vet.  I guess most 6 year olds do though, haha

I can't imagine her much bigger.  Some days I swear she just looks like she may burst.  Her position is always on her stomach with all four legs stretched out.  When she gets up the carpet is HOT.   She seems to stick to the air vent in my room, so that's good.  The dog isn't allowed up stairs.  I don't worry she would eat them, but she likes to bum the cats on the head and run off like its a game of tag.   She's also part Collie, so there is the herding issue.

My daughter wanted to be a veterinarian when she graduated from kindergarten. Now she's 18 and in college with history and education majors!

A unit on cats and kittens and their care and stages of kitten hood would be terrific! I homeschooled my daughter for many years and there were many times we incorporated current events into our curriculum.

Sounds like your cat may be within a couple weeks. Let us know as you begin to observe more signs that she's getting closer! :)

I didn't put together a unit about cat care but I definitely involve the kids in everything. My daughter does their food, water and litter boxes. My son is only 3 but he is responsible for keeping count of them throughout the day. It wasn't as new or exciting for them though because we always have kittens here. She's also surrounded by feeding tubes, trach supplies, and all things medical because of her sister. Putting together an actual unit about cat/kitten care would be a good idea though. It might even be a great way to approach the subject of conception and birth if she doesn't already know.

AGH!  I found A FLEA!  Just one.  I am panicking now!  I bathed her, my cats and dog.  Seriously don't know how she got a flea.  We did have fruit flies a few weeks ago maybe they carry them in?  I've vacuumed three times since last night, boraxed and shampooed up stairs where she is 90% of the day.   So I am off to the store tonight I guess to buy her treatment.  All I have now is lavender oil I put on the dog.  She never brings anything in with her.  I am going to set out some traps tonight to see if its in the carpets.  But how worried should I be about one little flea?

One flea is one flea too many, and it either came in with your dog or hatched from an egg.

You're doing all the right things, so a tube of topical flea medicine on the cat and the dog should cover it. You could also buy a can of flea spray for carpets and furniture and use that as well. I've found it very effective when used in conjunction with the topical.

We have kittens!  Two that I can tell.  She had them under my daughters bed, alone and I guess between the hours of 4 and 7.  My son had a nightmare around 3:30 and I dozed back to sleep around 4.  She was down stairs without a care in the world.  My daughter shook me awake at 7, "Mummy, Mummy Tink had her babies"  I panicked because she sleeps with her door open.  But my male cat was just standing guard.  Kinda seemed relieved we were there haha.   I will have to pull my camera out for photos later.  Little stinker!  I thought I had two more weeks at the least!

Make that four and possibly one on the way.  She is already so attentive.  My daughter unknown to me put some wet food under the bed when I took the dog out.  Came back and she is just meowing at it, like move it closer haha.  So I did...

Should I be worried she hasn't eaten the umbilical cords yet?

Oh boy! You have bigger problems than finding homes right now.

You need to weigh each kitten and begin a rotation every hour with the biggest kittens in one group and the smallest in the other. While one group nurses you'll need to put the others in a box with a heating pad set on low under a blanket.

There is no way all eight kittens will be able to nurse at once, and bottom nipples always have better milk. The stronger kittens will root out the weak ones, and the runts will starve.

If you don't already, you need a can of powdered KMR and a 1 or 2 mL syringe to supplement the weakest once we see what's what. It may take 24 hours to know. Weights are important.

She does not need to eat 8 placentas! If she did she may have diarrhea and not be hungry for awhile. Otherwise she needs lots of wet food and fresh water. Put her litter box nearby.

You will be rotating every single hour including through the night. We can move it to two hours when we see how they are doing.

You are going to be busy and tired :).

Well I am just really worried since they will be ready around Halloween time.  So that is going to make finding good homes extra hard.

Agh, where is this information on the internet?  Everything I've been reading says not to touch them until they are 2 weeks of age.  I mean she gets up every so often and flips.  I thought that what she was doing herself, no?  And a heating pad... Its 80 degrees today and while I have the air on they are under a bed.  We live in a 100 year old house so even with it at 73 its probably 80 under the bed.  I was worried they would be over heated.  I am not trying to be rude, but I have never heard or read of any of this...  I am going to have to give vet tech friend a call because now I am worried...

If it's that warm you can probably do without the heating pad.

Most of us on here give the advice we do because we've been there and done that. We've had the first-hand experience, which many vets do not.

Websites do not necessarily discuss the problems inherent in extra-large litters. Most cats do not have 8 kittens. It's a myth that one should not handle kittens, especially if they need handling.

I would strongly suggest waiting until after Halloween to re-home the kittens, for obvious reasons. Many shelters suspend adoptions of black cats beginning two weeks before Halloween and for a week after. Re-homing in pairs will give the kittens a playmate and make it easier for you!

We're here to give advice and support. We'll share the link to another recent thread where we helped a member whose cat had 9 kittens.

Yea I did a search and found the one with 9.

I miss counted there are 7.

So are you saying I need to hand feed half every hour while she nurses the others?  Or take half out once and hour?  How long do they nurse.  I;ve only nursed my babies.

The ASPCA is where I have been getting my info.  Is there are more reliable site?

This site is more reliable!

Seven is better than eight.

No, don't feed anybody yet. You're going to end up with a runt you may have to supplement though. It almost always happens when there are more than five or six.

You need to weigh them all first.

Then you need to leave them with mama today and observe how well they are nursing. That is how we will know which ones go into which group. It may be that they manage okay with some supplementing.

Does this make sense? Can you get weights? Do you have a kitchen scale?

I am terribly sorry for asking so many questions.  My friend  doesn't get off work until 7.

I have a digital scale, is that ok?  Or should I go buy something else tonight?

I moved them to a box with towels and puppy pads.

I just responded above. Digital scale is fine :).

Post the weights once you get them.

And ask away - that's what we're here for :).
