Yesterday my pregnant cat had gotten out of the house, she came back today but my family and I dont think she is pregnant anymore. We tried not to let her out of the house during her pregnancy but she had escaped when one of my family members didnt notice her leaving when they were coming in. Today she came back and her stomach is relatively flat compared to before, could she have had her babies? I would suspect if she had her babies she would come home to eat and then go back to her kittens. We tried putting her outside so we could follow her and find her kittens but she just sat in the dirt. Im sorry if any of this is common knowledge, this is the first time we've had a pregnant animal in our family.

Has she had a litter before? A first time mother cat might not have known what to do, and might have failed to bond with the kittens. Another animal might have taken her litter.  I think I saw recently that a cat had her first litter on a tree branch. They were in considerable danger. People were able to save part of the litter if I remember right.  Check her over for injuries.  Can you get her spayed so this kind of heartache doesn't happen again? You must be so worried about her.

Are her mammary glands full?

She has most likely birthed her kittens somewhere outside. In fact, that's probably why she wanted to go out - to nest in a place of her choosing. It's a shame she got out.

You need to take her outside, and search for newborn kitten sounds on You Tube. You play these and hopefully she will take off in search of her babies. You'll need to follow her.

If you find the babies, bring them back immediately. I hope no one has taken them and that she will lead you to them.

Try this and let us know what happens.

@SilkyM  this is her first litter. i checked her over and she has no injuries luckily :) phew  im trying to get her fixed as soon as possible but im pretty tight on money at the moment so its going to take a while ,, and yea i was really worried about her :( im very happy that shes safe at home now though

@sarthur2  Im not sure if her mammary glands are full, i looked up what they would look like in google images but couldnt scroll through bc of the animal injury shown in various pictures, its very triggering for me :(  but since she has been home her stomach looks much bigger than it had been when she came home , and i felt her stomach and felt was seemed like kitten paws. im now pretty sure that shes still pregnant , phew

i really appreciate the help both of u have given me :) thanks

So now you plan to keep her in the house to let her have her kittens inside? That is the best possible thing to do. Also, after she has her kittens, do not let her go out until after she is spayed, which is when the kittens are about 8 weeks old.

Have you set up a nesting area for her?

Sorry.. Didn't get to finish.. I've had to go through " eager" momma cat and "eh..WTH ever.. I'm not going back" momma kitty.. Usually either the liter was sickly, she had difficulty, or something of that nature..usually.. They go back to their young. I've even had a cat JUST have one (2)max be born from the momma. Only reason I mention that is cause my childhood cats ALWAYS HAD LOTS of babies! Even had an ultrasound done on my sons cat..after the 1 Beth..nope just one! And she DIDNT like her baby much after she was weened.. And we basically MADE Puffy take care of her baby Smoke till weening.. Puffys other liters afterwards were multiple kittens and she took better care. So either she's lost them to birth, sickness, or maybe" not ready" to be momma..yours should be vocal about getting you to let her go back to them. Not an expert so plz.. Lol.. don't rely on this "old lady-with ALL the cats" knowledge.. It's just by experience I've had my whole life..like buttering a cats paws when you first release them to the outdoors- just works..hehe! Hope you find your babies, if there are any ,and if not I'm so sorry maybe next time..

@sarthur2   Yes we've been keeping her inside ever since she came back. We set up an area in a room we arent currently using but she doesnt seem to like hanging out in there.. Should i move her nesting area into a room she's more accustomed to?

Glad she and her unborns are safe. Some cats like being around 'their' humans when they give birth, especially the first time, others want to be left alone. So I would make up two or three nesting places with cardboard boxes and towels, in safe places like a closet or the corner of a bathroom, and show them to her, She will decide herself. Of course, she may have them on your bed!

If your cat has a room she's accustomed to, I would be inclined to set up a nest in that room, along with a couple of other private places so she can choose. And if she has them in an odd spot, you can move her and her kittens after she's done birthing.
