2 years ago after multiple blockages from struvite crystals Domino had a cystotomy. He's been symptom free with clean urinalisys since.
With my vet, who loves hills food (ugh), we want to switch Domino to a quality non rx food that is low in phosphorus, magnesium and ash.
Does anyone have any idea of a good food or have any experience with this issue? i would greatly appreciate your input.
Thanks!

Daves makes a canned diet that may be what you need ..

Purina Pro Plan makes one too ..

You may also find this chart helpful ..   It gives the Phosphorus level in most canned foods ..

I have only seen Dave's in pâté. He hates pâtés.
My vet said no purina, friskies or meow mix.
I've been on the catinfo.org all afternoon and can't find a wet food that won't take us broke. I do appreciate your help, keep it coming please :)

I'm ready to give up and feed friskies urinary wet from what I've read it's better than the hills rx c/d DRY food he's eating.
Argh why is this so hard?

Oh , I am sorry those won't work for you . I will keep looking ..  So it has to be shreds or chunks ?

Purina Friskies does not make the urinary formula anymore ..

Thanks I was looking at the soulistic and weruva only drawback is price for 5 cats and its manufactured in Thailand.
That makes me worry about quality.

Methigel DOES say "along with a proper diet", so not sure just using this alone would be ok, especially since your boy had multiple blockages.

WHY is your Vet opposed to Purina?  They are taking over just about every pet food company out there, it seems
And when it comes to Urinary Food, there really aren't that many choices, especially non-RX.  (You DO know Hills makes it in cans, some of which are not Pate, right?)

Fussie Cat makes a low magnesium food for your purposes also.  Here's a link:  http://www.wag.com/cat/p/fussie-cat...h low magnesium canned cat food&cookies_set=1

Oh, and Weruva and Soulistic, even though manufactured in Thailand, are very good brands.

My vet is pro hills and thinks anything you can get at grocery is bad.
She wants him on a low phos, mag and ash diet over the counter as the hills C/D brought him up to 21 lbs.

He also won't eat any RX wet food even chunky style.
Before he got crystals he ate weruva, wellness, evo, merrick, tiki ,you name it but I was ignorant and he ate alot of fish, my fault.
It's been 2 years if clean urinalysis no crystals nothing. So at him being 21 lbs she thinks reg food with methigel is better than feeding all 5 of my cats hillsC/D.

Were you free feeding him that C/D kibble?  I thought YOU wanted to switch him to something else.  My mistake.  So, he needs to lose weight as well as maintain a low PH, etc. diet?

Canned is definitely the way to go to lose weight, and is always best (IMHO) for urinary issues just because more moisture helps flush things out.  Unfortunately, for weight loss purposes, low carb is usually the way to go, but MOST urinary food are not going to be low carb.  The Weruva and Soulistc are probably your best bet, if your Vet thinks they are low enough in what counts, and they are extremely low in calories.

Is there any reason you need to feed all five cats the same thing?  Can't you separate this boy out of the herd at feeding time.  Might it be risky feeding everyone else low phos, and  magnesium whenthey don't have a problem?  Not to mention the expense?

I would love to feed the friskies. IMO any wet is better than dry. The higher end wet is soooo expensive.
My vet feels that all grocery store food is like McDonald's for cats.
