Hello everyone! I have recently taken in a stray, he's very loving and caring. He's been hanging around my place for days, he's eating and drinking water, but refuses to use the litter box, he scratches at the door I let him out he goes to the washroom and then comes back in. Is this normal behavior?

It's normal for an indoor/outdoor cat. Some people don't even provide a litter box if their cat goes outdoors, which is a bad idea. Their cats could become ill and have to stay indoors or the weather could get really nasty, and then they don't have a box or a cat used to eliminating in one.

You could try a large open box filled with potting soil. If he takes to that, you could add increasing amounts of litter over time till he's just using litter. There are dozens of feral cats at our shelter that have successfully switched to using a litter box, so it can easily be done.

I agree with above.   Another tip is to sprinkle some kitten attract litter.  Dr Elseys is the most renown, but there are probably others too.  Its pricey, but you dont need to use it all, its enough you sprinkle on the upperst layer.

Yeah, its wise he has his own litter inside too, even if he prefers to do his outside.
