My kittens are 1 day old today they have all been gaining weight they now are 4.6 oz to 5.2 oz however mama cat doesn't lay with them all the time. Do they ever lose interest? She is a young mom. Every time I go in there she is usually laying in the room she's in and the babies are in the cage alone. They aren't crying they are usually sleeping but yesterday she didn't leave them at all. Not sure what's going on. Any ideas?

Mama cats tend to stay with their babies most of the time, even if they are lying outside the nest while the babies sleep. It sounds like she's doing her job nursing her babies even if you don't see it :).

Is it OK for me to be going in by her or should I be leaving her alone?

When should the umbilical cords fall off? 3 out of 4 kittens still have them. They were born on Sunday.

I need help!!! My kittens ended up with eye infections. I took them to the vet, they gave my eye drops and some lyseine gel. I'm scared to give them the gel. What is the best way to give it? The vet said to put it on the inside of their lip. I'm afraid of them aspirating it. What's the best way to give the gel?

Yes, just a tiny smear on the gums. They will lick it and not aspirate.

Ok thank you. How long do you leave them in a closet for? I'm ready to build something bigger for them and put them out in the room now. They are 12 days old is this to soon.

The mom usually keeps the kittens tucked away for 3 or 4 weeks.  You can try to move them but she may move them back.

Yes, it's too soon. I would leave them in the closet with mom for three full weeks. They cannot regulate their body temperature the first three weeks. Mom will probably bring them out herself around that time. There's no reason to rush.

When do you start weaning the babies? Mine will be 3 weeks on Sunday. When is it ok to start playing with them?

Most kittens will not wean over to mush until around 4 weeks, and then it's a process for a couple of weeks. They continue to nurse for quite awhile too. When you start the mush you also begin litter training with a kitten-sized box or pan.

You can sit on the floor and let them crawl on you and around you anytime now. They will be primarily interested in tussling with each other initially. They may be interested in balls or string too. The "learning to play" grows with each week :).

I'm sorry I have one more question. At what age should they be walking normally? They are all pretty shaky on their legs. I don't know if that's normal or if they are brain damaged from mom being vaccinated.
