Well, bummer! My breeder emailed me today to let me know that a couple of the kittens got colds after their 2nd set of shots, so I'm not going to be able to get my kitten for a couple weeks as a precaution. Mine has been fine and the other kittens are almost better now, but better safe than sorry I guess.
I've bought a ton of stuff in the last week since this is my first indoor kitty - litter pan, litter, food and water bowls, can food, dry food, scratching board, kitty blanket, pet carrier, pet bed, and, of course, toys!
I heard from my breeder today and unfortunately things have taken a turn for the worse. Bogey and one littermate are now being watched at the vet's, and the third kitten was lost to pneumonia.
The vet thinks the mother may have been carrying a virus, but the kittens were weaned already, so my breeder thinks it was from the 2nd set of shots. It's a bad situation.
Neighbors of mine have a bobcat. I remember driving past their house before I knew they had one and saw it perched on the roof. My first thought was 'I didn't know there were bobcats in this area', cougars yes, but not bobcats.
They say now that they wouldn't do it again. They're much more work than a typical cat and have a lot of wildness left in them. Guests can't just walk up to them and pet them, they have to go through a head butting ritual with him first, just as if they were another bobcat.
Every once in a while the battery for their invisible fence will die and he will take off for a day or 2. He has no claws or fangs, so he can't defend himself very well. He has shown up in our yard a couple of times and it's always a shock to look out and see him.
He is a beautiful animal.
I'm sorry, I didn't see the second page. I hope they're doing ok.
I don't know if the breeder would be interested, but there is a homeopathic remedy called 'thuja' that is commonly given after shots to lessen the side effects. It probably wouldn't do much for them at this stage, but would be good to have on hand for future shots.
Wow, I've just come across this thread - Bogey is a little sweetie and I'm so sorry to hear he's poorly. I do hope he gets better very soon.
I've never come across this breed before - I've looked at a couple of your links and they are very striking cats indeed. Is the stumpy tail something that's evolved over time or have they been specifically bred that way?
Thanks for the good thoughts everybody. I'm hoping to hear how things are going in the next day or so. It's pretty nerve-racking not knowing.
As far as the breed goes, I had seen pictures of them before, but I knew they were fairly rare so I wasn't expecting to get one. I was very surprised when I came across a breeder in Iowa. After reading up on the history of the breed, I found that some people had found a bobtailed cat while in Arizona and wound up taking him home to Iowa. So even though I didn't know it, this is kind of where the breed has its roots.
