I took my 16 year old cat to the vet today and she said her kidney level was 12 when it should be 10, I thought I would come home and google it but can't see anything about a level 12 so I'm confused.   I understand this is not a vet site but wondered if anyone had any knowledge?

Thanks for any advice :-)

Thanks for your reply :-)

I didn't realise there were so many readings until I came home but she did mention that the protein in her last meal could have caused it to elevate?  She hadn't eaten in 12 hours though so I wouldn't have thought that but Is there a protein reading?  She definitely said it should be 10 and it was 12.

I'm just worried because she gave her Loxicom which can make kidney function worse.

What country are you in?  Normal ranges can vary quite a bit due to the units used.

OK, so I looked at normal ranges for Creatinine and BUN, or Urea in the UK, (which are the indicators for kidney disease) and it is not at all clear what test your vet was talking about.

Can you get a copy of the results and post them here?

Firstly, we are looking for Urea, Creatinine, Phosphorus, Potassium, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, and then any urinalysis results, especially specific gravity.

Urea especially, can be elevated due to dehydration. It is good to look at the whole picture.

I've got a copy of her records but it's not allowing me to add an attachment so I've managed to copy and paste it below, I have any advice would be great!  Does anyone know what scoliosis of the spine is, should I or a vet have noticed it sooner or an it develop with old age - is she in a lot of pain with this?

Also, I would appreciate is anyone could advise is there anything I should be asking or requesting with the vet on her next appointment next Tuesday 4th August?

Thanks so much for taking the time to help :-)

Scoliosis is a spine that is twisted sideways. It is usually a genetic condition that worsens with age. It does not necessarily cause pain, but prevents straight walking and can cause muscle wasting. King Richard III had it and he could still ride a horse and lead his troops in battle.

Faithie,

Did your vet suggest that your cat had kidney disease?  I certainly hope not...

BUN can fluctuate quite bit and a slightly elevated reading does not necessarily mean anything. A reading of 12 when normal is up to 10 is not all

that high and could simply be dehydration.

More testing would have to be done to evaluate kidney function, such as Creatinine and Specific Gravity.  At this point, I would not

worry about it until you get more tests done.  Check the link given by betsygee. Good info there.

I would worry about the Meloxicam though...

Best to you and Kitty

Yes she suggested kidney disease. There's no change in my old girl, she's still sleeping 23 hours of the day. Any ideas on what tests I should insist on? The vet suggested euthanasia but I dont want to do that until I know why, I don't want to have any regrets. Are there any that will give a clearer picture for me?

Is there any reason my old moggie would start stinking, I can't have her next to me she smells awful! She smelt once or twice around 2 months ago, I thought it was because she wasn't grooming because of her arthritis so I would brush her and it went within hours, she's grooming herself now as the pain has eased a bit but has smelt awful for about 24 hours now.

PS... sorry I didn't know I could edit the above to add this, also apologies if I should have started another thread, I'm new to this.
