Hi, I see there are some other postings similar to mine, but I didn't want to hijack them, so am starting a new one.

My story: I have a female shelter cat named Lucy, that I adopted 2 years ago, and brought home to live with my existing 14 year old male cat. She has always been kept indoors since I brought her home. I thought she was very mellow, let me pet herat the shelter. Well, when I got her home, she turned out to be very timid, and would run away from me. Now after 2 years, she is still just as afraid of other people, and runs if I try to go to her. She will only let me touch her if she is eating, and then just barely. She will come and circle my chair if I am eating, and want a handout, but when done, she runs off, with no touching allowed.

My older existing cat, is 3 times her size, and has always been a bit of a bully to her. She seemed to not mind, and they would play chase a lot and she would try to lick his face, etc. She would eat her own food, but the other cat would eat very fast and then push her out of her dish, eating most of it. She seemed to accept this and would wait to eat afterward. All seemed OK. I have been trying to feed them separately, but she won't eat alone. She will just wait, and when I let them back together, the big cat eats most of her food. Only then, will she go and eat what is left over. She must of been the runt of her litter.

Well last Monday, about 11 days ago, she had vomited up over night. I thought nothing of it, she has done this occasionally. The next night it happened again, only it was just frothy liquid. Again, seemed not that unusual. Then Wednesday it happened about 4 times. Worried, I got her a vet appointment that afternoon. They took blood, did an exam, took her temperature, which was normal. They said she was dehydrated, so gave her IV fluids while we were there, and a shot to stop the vomiting. I got some bland food from the vet also to give her.

The vet called me with the blood work results, and all was in the normal range, thyroid, etc. Only thing was a very slightly elevated white cell count. All seemed better last few days, she seemed mostly normal, but not really eating. She mainly wanted fresh turkey from me, which she usually did. Then she started to vomit again, very small amounts. She now is refusing nearly everything, beyond a small lick. She seems to be drinking water, I found the usual pee in the litterbox, same as usual size.

All the vet work so far has cost over $400, and they wanted to do an X-Ray and ultra sound test, which I decided to wait and see if she got better without more expensive work. But it seems she isn't. I will call the vet tomorrow and tell them whats been happening.

Its so weird, because otherwise, she seems her usual self, sleeping, window watching... Just the cat versus cat 'play' seems to be bothering her more, and she wants to keep away from the bigger cat more than I have been used to seeing. I wonder if all this is being caused by that.

Has anyone else had a similar type of situation? I wish I knew what might of triggered it.

Thanks

Hello Talos,
I had a similar situation about a month ago. I don't mean to worry you, but it was lung fluid which was cancerous... we had to put my angel to sleep. If I knew then what I know now, things may have ended up differently. Two vets weren't able to diagnose him for months, they said he was constipated and dehydrated... and gave him vit. B injections for a month to make his appetite come back.
My suggestion to you is, get a chest xray asap so you can see what's going on. I don't know why the vet doesn't just do that from the start... it's cheaper than the repeated visits because the vet can't diagnose the problem...

I have an appointment back at the vet this afternoon, soonest they could get me.

This morning, Lucy ate some chicken, and the gravy in the food, she is peeing like she always has, when I checked the litter box.

A new symptom I am noticing, she seems to maybe having trouble chewing. She has always been a messy eater, with bits of food all around the food dish, and before all this started, would eat some dry kibble each day, getting lots of bits all over. Since becoming sick, she hasn't eaten any dry food, and the bits of wet food everywhere. It might be something to do with her mouth or throat. I am going to let the vet know, hopefully its a clue as to what is wrong.

One other thing I now recall happening just before her becoming sick, I gave her a free sample of a food called 'Party Mix' that was in the new container of cat litter I bought. she loved it, and ate it all in one sitting. It was maybe 10-12 pieces of dry food shaped like Chex cereal. I wonder, if there was something wrong with that? It was sealed in a packet, inside of another packet to keep it from getting into the cat litter. She was the only one that had some, my other cat didn't eat any, he wasn't there to get some.

Otherwise, she is acting normal, for her, wanting handouts from me, sleeping in her usual spots, grooming herself.

My vet X-rayed Lucy, and found nothing abnormal. Only discovery was she has a pellet in her right rear leg. That happened before I adopted her, I had no idea. She must of had a rough life before I got her. The doctor said it was ok, not bothering her.

Now they want me to get an ultra sound, to see if there is anything they can detect. They don't have a doctor there that could do it until Wednesday. I got her home now, after they gave more IV fluids and another anti vomiting shot. She seems comfortable. I got some more super bland I/D food for her too, and she ate a couple spoonfuls already, which is good. The X-rays showed she had nothing in her stomach at all...

It sure is stumping them what could be wrong... To the tune of $800 so far...

I took Lucy to the emergency clinic this morning, since that was the only way to get an ultrasound scan done right away. It was all bad news. She had a large mass in her liver and it had already spread to the spleen and intestines. I had to make the horrible decision to put her to sleep. I didn't want her to suffer any more.

She went from being normal to beyond hope in just 2 weeks time. I didn't want to make her suffer any longer, so am having her put to sleep. Its a sad day for me, I will miss her.

A side note, 3 visits to the vet doing all the tests and treatments, came to about $1900. All to find out I had to put her to sleep.

I am so very sorry. What a shock to find this out. Poor Lucy. At least she's not hurting any more. Fly free, Lucy...where there is no fear, and all animals are kind, and friends.

I imagine the thread will be closed, but I'd love to hear from an expert about why an X-ray or palpitation wouldn't reveal anything abnormal give the size of the mass. I'd have thought bloodwork would reveal massive amounts of elevated liver enzymes. [emoji]128543[/emoji] you did the right thing. Again, I'm so sorry.

You did the right think.Lucy is in a better place, I recently had to euthanize my baby because of lung fluid and cancer. He had symptoms for over two years, but never once did the vet listen to me when I said there's something respiratory going on. they said, he constipated and dehydrated... after months of vitamin b 12 injections, I said, "i want him to have an xray of his chest." They found one lung completely filled with fluid and it was cancerous.we were upset that it wasn't diagnosed after all these years, but to top it off, we agreed that he needed to be euthanised, and during the process, they took him into the "back room" to insert his catheter. They had a hard tim finding a vein and we heard him screaning. Nothing could have been worse for me, I still think about that moment that I should have run into the back room and saved him, but didn't. They brought him out to us hyperventilating. This is not how my last seconds with my angel should have been. Give them a simple injection to let them fall asleep slowly, then insert the catheter so the animal isn't in pain during its very last seconds of life! I still cry thinking about that day, six weeks ago. I will never forgive that ignorant woman that hurt him in both paws.

I am so very sorry about your poor Lucy. I understand the pain you must be feeling. It truly hurts when we lose one of our kitties. No matter what choice we make when they become ill, the results are still the same. They are gone and the pain over losing them can be unbearable at times. Try to remember the happy times and the life you gave her. You loved her and she knew that. She loved you in return and would want you to remember her with smiles.
RIP Sweet Lucy!
You were very much loved and will be remembered always!

Hi, thanks for your kind thoughts, I appreciate them. I am wondering the same, why they didn't pick up on what was wrong earlier, from all the blood work as well. I feel so frustrated, that so little could be done. Of all the blood tests they wanted to do, none of them showed any problems.

I am glad she won't have to suffer any more, watching her decline so fast, took a lot out of me. Thanks again for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it.

Hello, and thanks for the condolences. I appreciate your caring. I am so sorry to hear about your loss too. Makes me cry, how they have to suffer before we know what to do, and then find out its probably too late or impossible to help.

I was given the choice to take Lucy home after a B-12 injection, and 'hope' it might make her a little more comfortable, but she still couldn't eat anything, and would just slowly starve. I couldn't do that to her, and bear it myself. Two more trips in the car, on top of everything else. I watched them carry her away into their back room too. I didn't want to see her stop breathing.

I too, went through the euthanasia procedure with my mom's cat, about 9 years ago. That cat, was Susie, and she had a tumor on her spine that kept her from being able to walk or use the litter box. She had no quality of life left. She was so elderly too, 25 years old. She had a long life and outlived both my parents. That doctor came to my house and euthanized her. I was there to hold her, but like you, that doctor couldn't find a vein for the catheter either, and she was yowling in pain, I couldn't stand it...it was horrible. He took her away and we had her cremated and ashes scattered at a pet cemetery. So much sadness, so I understand how you feel still about your cat.

Thanks so much for the condolences, I really appreciate them. It will hurt for a long time, I keep thinking about her, and how she was, when not sick. She was a really smart cat. She didn't like to be near people much, but she and I had our routines, and she was so smart. She knew what to do when it was bed time, she just had to hear me say the words... She would come running when I yelled the word 'Greenies!" which she loved to eat. She could pick up food with her feet, she was so clever. Her little tick of lifting one foot off the floor when sitting and watching me... She was loved.

Hi, my first post on here... I have 2 spayed females, Roxy I got as a kitten, 3 yrs ago and Pasta I adopted from kitty death row, 2 yrs ago. For about 6 days, I noticed cat barf on the hallway rug and bedroom carpet. Then I heard Roxy heaving up and knew it was her. I took away the dry cat food and replaced with moist, that seemed to help for a couple days but now she is refusing EVERYTHING. Have a vet appt tomorrow morning. Will keep updates as I hope my experience can help others. Pray!!!
