I have a 14 week old Ocicat who loves exploring but he and my dog (8 y/o female) are still doing that awkward confrontation thing where I don't know if they're going to sniff each other or my dog is trying to go after my kitten. Any methods to familiarize them?

The trick with introducing dogs to cats is to have the dog very well trained  - at least so you have a really solid 'sit-stay' and 'leave (it)'. I would also keep the dog on a leash to start with, until you are 100% certain that she's not going to go after the kitten. I had to introduce a greyhound who'd no experience with cats to two adult cats a few years ago. We started with him being on a leash, and then progressed to having him off leash but supervised - we had a big dog crate that we'd put him in if we went out. Over time, he learned what was was expected, and we've not had a problem since.

Crating can be a great way to introduce cats and dogs, since the cat is more likely to feel safe and gain confidence that way. Once the cat has learned not to act like prey around the dog, things become much easier. The only difference I'd make in your situation is not crate your dog for longer periods (i.e., if you go out) - rather, I'd have the kitten shut in his safe room, only using the dog crate for relatively brief meeting sessions.

Good luck with the introductions - it can be done

You're welcome

Ask as many questions as you need to - I've done a fair bit of training with my own dogs (and my current lab is always on the lookout for loopholes
), and I've always had cats and dogs together. If I can help, I will...and that goes for others here too.
