I have a 3 week old kitten who weighs 13oz. Vet prescribed clavamox for a UTI. Dosage is .5ml twice a day. This seems like a high dosage for such a small kitten. Anyone know if this dosage is correct?
Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook shows a fairly wide range of Clavamox dosing specific to the type of bacteria targeted. While there is no 'kitten dose' suggested for UTIs, the standard UTI dosing is 62.5mh for any weight cat, twice daily, up to 30 days. Based on that, I'd have no concerns with 1/2ml twice a day for that kitten. (You should note that you didn't state the strength of the liquid you have - it's available in several strengths - nonetheless, I still wouldn't be worried.)
I would be more worried about preventing diarrhea (a frequent side effect of antibiotics) in such a little one and/or in keeping the kitten hydrated should diarrhea occur....I think I'd be using a little probiotic spaced evenly in between the antibiotic doses to try and prevent this and having something on hand to make a 'stinky soup' should it happen.
