I have a 1 year old domestic short hair cat. We recently went on vacation for a week. I had someone come to care for him 2x a day. His litter box was cleaned and he was fed regularly. Since we've been home he has been pooping on the floor at night while we are all sleeping. His litter box is clean and he isn't doing this during the day while we are awake. He is also meowing more often than he used too. I'm not sure why he is doing this or what I can do to get him to stop. Help with any advice please.....

Be sure to clean the areas where he poops with an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle.  His sense of smell is very sensitive and he can detect odors where humans can't.  If he's returning to the same spot, it might be because he now thinks it is the right place to go.  Enzyme cleaners eliminate that odor and break the cycle.

Thank you both! I believe that it is stress related. I have never had a cat that is so attached to me. He was a stray kitten whose mother was killed and we got him when he was only 4 weeks old. I believe that is why he is so attached to me. I have been using woolite to clean it with. It works great at getting the smell away. I will look into an enzyme cleaner. He mostly goes in the same spot but sometimes it is elsewhere.

I figured out part of our poo problem. My poor Mo is afraid to go into the basement where the litter box is. I moved it upstairs and he hasn't gone on the floor since. Normally he wouldn't have a problem going down their in fact he would spend most of the day laying down there. I also noticed we have a new flea problem. My cats are indoor cats but every year since we've been living here we get fleas. I think they come in from the outside possibly through the basement. Is it possible that he doesn't want to go down there because of the fleas? Does anyone know if fleas are attracted to certain types of plants?
