Hello, my cat souty has had a chunk out of his tail near the base of the tail. I've taken him to the vets and they are going to cut some of the skin of from his back and move it forward over the wound then stitch. Firstly, what are the risks he will die under the anesthetic he's 7 years old and his healthy and hasn't eaten for about 15 hours. Also the vet seemed confident he won't have to lose his tail but I'm still worried his tail is mobile and he's moving it around a lot I'm just very worried he's having the operation around mid day. Thank you x

Welcome to TCS! I'm sorry to hear about your poor kitty's tail! Have you worked with your vet for a long time? Have you built a good relationship and trust him or her? Here is an article to help you communicate with your vet if you need it. Make sure you establish a follow up protocol before the surgery.

An article regarding your kitty's tail:

An article to help you with leaving your kitty for surgery:

If your cat is healthy and has never had a poor reaction to anesthesia please try not to worry too much, although it is a serious thing. Fasting is also a good thing to be doing, as it decreases chances of complications with the tube that will help your kitty breathe while he is under.

I know this must be scary for you, please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hello thank you for the links and reply I'd say we've got a very experienced vet as they've been a vet for about 20 years minimum but I'm sorry to say the tail link didn't specify anything about chunks being missing in the tail. Do you think he will lose his tail and has anyone else been in this situation?

If you have an experienced vet that you trust and he thinks he can save the tail I would listen to him :) it's easy to fall into the worrying trap when it comes to things like this. Sending good vibes for your kitty's tail! :vibes::vibes::vibes:

Glad to her he came out fine and with a tail no less! Now the scariest part is over and you can focus on helping him heal :)
