Hello everyone. I'm not sure which forum to post this in so here goes...

I recently took in a stray calico cat. She's about 1-2 years old. Anyway, I have a small apartment and I already have two older cats. I had the stray vet-checked and she's fine. No illnesses or anything. She got her shots and everything.

I'm afraid to say that I'm unable to keep her. She's affecting my allergies really bad and plus, with my small apartment, everything is so condensed. I didn't think this all the way through and I think my apartment is just big enough for two cats and not three. I guess I was so concerned about keeping this stray warm during the cold Long Island winter that like I said, I didn't think this all the way through.

I'm thinking about going to the vet and asking people there if someone wants it. They loved it. I'm not sure what else to do as I've never had to give away a pet before.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Larry D, Being that you're on Long Island, what did North Shore Animal League tell you

One day of delay and my Penny would've been a North Shore kitty :kitty5:

Hi,

I'm not sure I know what you mean. Are you suggesting I bring her to the North Shore Animal League? I haven't really called anybody yet.

There's no place like home
If you go thru a shelter, particularly a no-kill shelter, make sure that they understand that she was a stray rescue - most will not take "owner relinquish", as they are typically overwhelmed by the strays they pick up on the streets (around here the owner relinquish pets are typically put down first at kill shelters).

I found the best resources are vets - they may not be able to find you a home for her, but can refer you to someone that can help you. Pick up the phone book and work thru all the vets in your area until you get a referral - vets that specialize in cats usually more resources available to them than just generalists.

Do NOT put an ad in the paper for "free to a good home". If you resort to that, ask for a $25 adoption fee - if you are comfortable with the adoptees, you can waive the fee. This will avoid the people that collect animals for lab research.

Good luck!!
