Hi everyone,

I have a 7 year old cat who acts like he is still a youngster. When I came home today I found him sitting in the corner with his back left leg sticking out funny. When I touched it he hissed at me. I laid him down on his side so I could feel it more to see if I noticed any broken bones/blood, etc. It is swollen at the calcaneal tuber/ calaneus area and it almost looks like it is twisted out awkwardly at that area too. He will let me touch and feel on that area, along with the rest of his leg, but when I touch his metatarsus he hisses at me and swats for me to stop touching it.

I am concerned because although he is constantly climbing on dressers and counters this has never happened before. I don't think it is broken because he lets me touch on it but I am no where near a cat expert. I am hoping maybe he twisted it funny on something when he was acting like a crazy cat and it will heal on its own with a little R & R time? Or does it sound like it is broken and an X- ray is needed?? Any thoughts or answers are GREATLY appreciated since I'm really worried about my sweet boy.

Thank you so much for your time

-Hannah

Hi catlover45 and welcome to TCS!

Honestly I would be getting your boy straight to the vet.. it could be a dislocation or any number of things, but the awkward position and swelling means it really needs attention.

Let us know how you get on.

A big welcome to TCS!  I'm sorry to hear your cat has somehow managed to injure himself (the things they get into!).  I would take him to the vet, too.  It seems he's in pain and you don't want him to make the injury worse if the leg needs to be immobilized.

I'd get him to the vet immediately, either an ER vet or call your regular vet and listen for after hours instructions.  Sounds like the poor baby is in pain and definitely uncomfortable.
