Hi, I have a three-year-old male who is only urinating. Last time he used the litter box was at night when we were sleeping (when he usually uses it). He's currently on medication for URI and has received medicine at the vet for coccidia oocyts.

I don't have the money to take him to the vet immediately. We have to take him to the vet on the 30th, since they said to take him back in two weeks for a follow-up (they said the medicine for the oocyts usually kills them with one dosage, but just in case they said to come back in two weeks). We adopted him last Sunday if it's important.

Today we found some dried tapeworm segments and also a flea as well as possibly flea feces in his fur. The flea was around his paw, the feces was just everywhere but in small amounts, and the segments were at the start of his tail.

What should I do about it? I want to make him get better, but the problem is that the wait is too long, but if we take him immediately then we won't be able to afford it.

Thank you.

EDIT:  He's begun pooping again; he seems like he's getting better. Thank you for all your help, Columbine!

When was he last wormed and when did he last poop?
The last time he pooped was either yesterday or the day before. I believe it was the day before, but I don't remember well enough. He had a stool sample at the vet, and the only thing they found were the ooycyts, so the tapeworm segments must be new. I noticed he had started licking his paw periodically yesterday, so I think he must have swallowed a few fleas.

When we go to the vet, if we can, then I expect to get Revolution both for the fleas and also because here in Florida there are a lot of mosquitoes (they even manage to get in your house if you leave all doors and windows closed the whole day).

I would call the vet. They should be able to give you an appropriate wormer without seeing him. I'm assuming he had diarrhoea prior to his coccidia treatment. Just like us, if cats get thoroughly emptied out from a bad diarrhoea episode, it can take a day or two for normal pooping to resume. I'd only expect a cat to poop once a day anyway. At this stage I don't think there's any cause for alarm. Mention it when you call about the wormer though - the vet has seen your cat and will have a clear picture of his general state of health.

Clean him up as much as he'll let you. If he'll tolerate it, a bath might be a good idea - it would get him cleaned up and (if you use Dawn dish soap) get rid of the fleas currently on him in one go.

No, he didn't have diarrhea. If he did, then it must have been before we adopted him. I'm not so sure anymore if they're actually dried tapeworm segments, but this is what they look like: http://goo.gl/FrZ86x

The first is a fabric-y blanket (they're in the top right corner) where he was sleeping, next two on a more thin blanket, and the last three were on the paper towels I used to pick them up.

The strong likelihood is that they are tapeworm segments. An appropriate wormer is all that is needed to sort them out.

If he hasn't pooped today, you could try giving him a little plain canned pumpkin to help get things moving - 3tsp a day is the usual 'dose'. If he doesn't poop in the next couple of days then you'll have to call the vet as he may need a laxative.

As a side note, I'm surprised he didn't have diarrhoea from the coccidia, as that's how it normally presents.

He recently did one turd of diarrhea; I haven't given him the pumpkin yet though. I'll keep that in mind if he ends up not pooping again.

We called the vet and they said that it's likely the medication they prescribed; a common side effect is dehydration and so that he might not want to poo. I also noticed he drinks a lot of water and eats not very much food, so the diarrhea kind of makes sense, but not very well when you match it up with the medicine's side effect.

I'm still trying to figure this out

It sounds counter intuitive, but diarrhoea can sometimes be a symptom of constipation. Without being too gross, waste builds up behind the blockage and then seeps out around it. Given the side effects of his meds, constipation seems very possible. If things don't normalise soon you may have to go back to your vet for a laxative.
