My cat Simba was not feeling well this morning. My mom told me that he threw up a few times. My mom went out to run some errands and I decided to fo some research. I noticed that he was salivating and that he was moving slower. He's 11 years old. I think that the cause could be either one or both of our two plants. We have a golden pothos (which I just found out was poisonous) and I think the other is a shamrock. It has 3 leaves and the bottom is a faded red starting from the middle. Simba also was having trouble using the bathroom. Another thing I noticed was that he had trouble lifting his leg to clean. PLEASE HELP!

When my mom comes home i'll ask if we can go to the vet. I can't call her because she left her phone.

This does sound like an urgent vet visit. Hoping you can get Simba in and checked out quickly!

Keep us posted.

He's doing better now. My mom said if he doesn't get better we'll take him to the vet. He's not salivating anymore and is walking better. My mom says that he just has to clear out his system. It actually might have been the weeds that made him sick because when we let him outside in the backyard he'll sneak and eat the weeds. I really want to take him to the vet to be sure but. -.-

What should I watch out for?

I have not had any experience with this, but I would think, staggering, vomiting, foaming at mouth, lethargy, vomiting, lack of appetite, hiding... any and all of these would need an urgent Vet visit. An emergency one at that.

I do not know where you live, but I do have a telephone number for teh ASPCA poison line. I think you do have to pay for the call through credit card.

I have it on my refrigerator. It is on a magnetic strip..

I will give it to you.

United States:  ASPCA Poison control Center  888-426-4435   It is very expensive. $65 dollars per call. I think that is outrageous.

Is there an emergency Vet near you? You could call them for advice, over the phone. They will most likely ask you to take the kitty in to evaluate.

Did you look up the plant to see how it effects animals? sorry if I am scaring you. I am not trying to, but if it was poison.....

Keep us updated...
 wishes you way....

I absolutely agree with artiemom artiemom . The fact he's moving slower is a worrying sign. Some plant toxins are slow acting. You need to get him to a vet ASAP. Take samples of the plants with you. A wait and see approach in this situation could end badly. If it was me, I'd be running to the vet.

Hope Simba's better soon :vibes:

Okay how about loose bowels? I'll ask my mom and see if we can take him to the vet. Would Paws clinic be good?

yes, loose bowels are a strong sign of badness.....

I do not know anything about a Paws clinic. You need one that is open 24/7 ... and emergency Vet, so they can act fast.

And as Columbine has said, take samples of the plant/weed with you...

Time could be of the essence....

I would run to the vet....this is an emergency...

please keep in touch

Both of these plants contain calcium oxalates, which irritates the mouth (drooling) and the GI tract. It can cause problems breathing because of swelling of the mouth and throat. I would strongly suggest a vet visit.

I'm not able to advise about specific veterinary practices - I only know the vets I personally use. In an emergency, I would use any vet available, regardless of whether I had previous experience of them...just as you would use any hospital if a person had possibly ingested a toxic substance.

Loose bowels are not surprising. The more worrying symptoms are the neurological ones - lethargy and other motion issues.
