Hello, I am new to this site. My kitty, Mizu, recently had a dental cleaning. She did not need any teeth extracted, and had only mild gingivitis.

The vet prescribed 50mg of Metronidazole, twice daily in pill form.

At first, pilling her way easy. She was starved after the procedure, so I would just put the pill in with her food and she would gobble it up. As she started feeling better, she started getting more wily about avoiding the pill. I tried the pill pockets, but she detests them. She would act like she got peanut butter stuck in her mouth and give me a dirty look. Eventually, she wouldn't come near it.

She was fairly good about getting the pills in her for about three and a half days until she missed one dose because I just could not get her to take it. Dry food, wet food, pill pocket, promise of treats, crushing it up, nothing. I wasted three of the pills just trying to get her to take them. She would get her saliva on them and they would dissolve, and whatever they touched, she wouldn't go near.

The next day, I called the vet looking for a solution. They suggested the pill pillar, which I went and tried. This was a colossal failure, and my cat nearly disowned me. I was eventually able to lure her into taking the pill through her food again.

Two days later, I was worried because she was missing some of her pills, and it was coming to the end of her dose, even though she had only technically missed maybe two doses, nonconsecutively. The vet prescribed the medicine in liquid form.

This time, it was 250mg of Metronidazole, .2ml twice a day. She has taken this twice a day for three days straight. They wanted me to do another week of the drug, even though she hadn't really missed many of the previous prescription.

Then I looked the drug up and saw the awful side effects, including fatality, that it can cause from prolonged use, as well as posts from cat owners speaking of the ill effects of the drug with dosages far smaller than what I was given.

I had already committed to stopping the drug because my cat won't even come near me anymore. The last week and a half has been incredibly traumatic for both of us, and I can feel our bond slipping. I don't even know why she was given this drug, as she didn't have a preexisting infection and from.what I have read here, most take it for diarrhea, which she doesn't have.

She hasn't necessarily acted out of sorts, but i was curious what others thought of the dosage, the length of the dose, and whether I should keep giving it to her. The last thing I want to do is make her worse, but I am also worried that she is getting to a point where she no longer trusts me as well..on top of reading this drug could kill my cat, and it's not even approved for use in animals.

Sorry for rambling, I just wanted to include as much info as possible. Mizu is 10lbs and just turned 7 years old.

:hugs: You and Mizu have certainly been through a rough time. I've dealt with impossible to pill cats before - life really can become hellish for the duration. I'm not surprised you're at the end of your tether.

No one here can advise you to straight up stop vet prescribed medication. We can't see your cat, and we're not vets.

I'm always extra wary of messing with antibiotics because of the potential repercussions with antibiotic resistant bugs - I think it's all our responsibilities to do all we can to preserve the efficacy of these drugs for as long as possible.

What I would do is print out the information about the major side effects etc and speak to your vet - either on the phone or in person. Be honest, and explain your concerns. If you're still unhappy after that, you can always seek a second opinion.

I hope Mizu is fully recovered soon. I'm sure your bond will quickly be just as strong as it has always been.
