I have two 1year old kitties and one of them has been throwing up every time he eats the Wellness canned or dry food. I thought that this was a high quality food based on reviews (and the price), but I was sadly mistaken. I gave my cat grilled chicken for a day to settle his stomach and switched to Stella and Chewy's brand cat food... BAD IDEA! THEY HATED IT! I have no idea why since all the reviews have stated that all cats love the taste of it!!

Now I have them on Freshpet VITAL cat food (not the original one) with the two cats they go through about 1 bag a day- each bag is about 6/7 dollars-pretty expensive- which I am willing to spend IF it's that good for them. My cat has not thrown up ever since being on this food!

I've read about spinach and carrots (ingredients in fresh pet) are harmful to cats. Why is this/ what can happen to the cats if they eat this? and does anybody have any other suggestions of pet foods (that are not freeze-dried- cats don't like that)? Also I love that Freshpet is available in many grocery stores.. makes it so much easier!!

Any suggestions/comments would be great!

Thanks!!!

Sorry about the delay in responses!! Welcome to the site!! If the cats are doing well on the FreshPet - then I would stick to that for the time being to see if the vomiting in fact does cease. Wellness is a good brand but that doesn't mean every cat will do well on it and some cats are allergic to certain ingredients and will vomit. You want to find out what could be causing the vomiting and it takes detective work which can be quite painstaking at times! So stick with the FreshPet for a bit longer to see if no vomiting. I think it is a very good choice too and have used it a time or two in my rotation. One of my cats loved the little pieces as kitty treats too.

My cats do love the Stella and Chewy's freeze dried raw. Did you soak the cubes first for a few minutes in warm water? It really pulls out the smell. Some cats will eat it dry but I prefer to rehydrate the cubes. I do have one cat that won't eat it. Cats can be so finicky as you are finding out!

Here is an extensive resource you can peruse when you have some time that is filled with cat diet related articles: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/248990/tcs-resources-thread-feline-nutrition-articles-and-threads

I'm glad the kitties are enjoying FP Vital.

I used to feed FPV about three years ago, for a couple of months but the cats lost interest in the food.  They also have / had an allergy to chicken (interestingly, they seem to be able to tolerate raw chicken, I've discovered recently). I also wasn't thrilled with the ocean whitefish in the food as I try to avoid fish.

I have not had luck with S&C's either - I've tried both Duck, Duck, Goose & the Tummy Ticklin' Turkey.

My cats really like Primal FD, there are more fruits and veggies than S&C's (pumpkin only), however, no synthetic vitamins (like S&C).  Despite the veggies and fruit in Primal, I'm still seeing smaller stools than when I was doing a combo of both FD raw and canned.

I would rather have my cats on a raw food with fruits and veggies than even the best meat only (e.g., TIki Cat Gourmet) canned food.

It really depends on the cats as far as what's tasty, despite reviews.

I don't know about carrots for cats (other than being a starchy veggie), however, I'm not comfortable feeding foods with spinach long-term:

Is spinach poisonous to cats? I looked at several websites and found conflicting information.

Good question, There is currently no solid data pertaining to feline ingestions of spinach, but we do know that it contains a small amount of calcium oxalates. While a leaf or two may not be an issue for a healthy adult cat, chronic and/or large ingestions of spinach could potentially cause crystal formation in the urinary tract. (And P.S., Because of this, spinach should be avoided completely in any cat with a history of urinary problems, including infections, crystaluria and kidney disease.)

It is very convenient to find FPV in grocery stores, if this is working for your kitties now, maybe you could use it for a bit and than rotate to something else. Good luck. :)
